Things to do in Salt Lake City
I say Olympic Games 2002…. you say Salt Lake City! Yes! So we already all know that Salt Lake city is a great winter sport city to visit… but what else is there to do? Let me give you a few ideas to help you plan your trip to Salt Lake City.
Sightseeing: Cathedral of Madeleine
If you enjoy architecture, the Cathedral of Madeleine is a nice stop during your visit. Built in 1909, the cathedral architecture is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic style, giving it its majestic feel. Pictorial and historic tours are available to inform you about the art represented in the cathedral and its history. Variety of artistic and musical events are organized all year long.
Museums
- Antique- Classic Automobile Museum
The Antique- Classic Automobile Museum was created 30 years ago with the idea to help troubled teenagers of the city. One of the largest car museum of the west of the USA, you can see more than 100 antique, classic and special international models displayed in the museum.
- Daughters of Utah Pioneer Museum
If you are interested in the history of Salt Lake City, you should check out The Daughters of Utah Pioneer Museum. It is a great place for you to learn about the history of the city for free. The museum dedicated to the pioneers of Utah is divided in four floors, each dedicated to a special period and topic ( for example the forth floor is dedicated to the Mormon, the second floor to the military).
- Discovery Gateway
The Discovery Gateway museum will be a great time for you AND your kids. This hands-on museum is great for them to discover, touch learn and play. You will find 7 different exhibits teaching children about nature, science, art and social behavior. Various programs are offered, so check out their website to see what will happen during your visit!
- Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts
The Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts is the first state museum to offer you the possibility to discover traditional art. You can see how the native artists of Utah, and the different communities have been sharing their crafts and culture while visiting the four main galleries presented in the museum.
Historic sites: The Place Heritage Park
The Place Heritage Park is a village where the life of the pioneers of the 19th century is recreated. Get a guided historical tour of the village that will teach you about the Mormon trail and Brigham Young’s farm the first governor of Utah and leader of the Mormon pioneers or just explore it on your own – it is like stepping into the past.
Discovering Nature: Antelope Island State Park and Great Salt Lake Park
As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Salt Lake City area, the Utah Sate Park is a must-see. You can enjoy the beach, camp, hike and observe a variety of animals (bisons, coyotes, pronghorns…) This park offers a lot of activities, so it is a great choice for a family trip or just an adult get away.
Outdoor activity: Hiking Cottonwood Canyon
Cottonwood Canyon will take your breath away with its scenery. 25 miles out of Salt Lake City, the drive is worth the spectacular views and encounter with nature. This canyon is very popular for well trained hikers, so chose your hike trip carefully. If you are looking for more challenging hikes, this is your place. Also keep in mind that snow covers the canyon during the winter, so make sure you have the suitable equipment!
