Visiting San Francisco
San Francisco, the jewel of California. The flair of this city is amazing and captures you from the minute you set your foot on the hilly streets of San Francisco. Here you will find some advice on how to make the most of your time in San Francisco and get the real inside scoop on what to do!
Explore by Foot:
San Francisco is considered the most European city on the West Coast. Most of the sights are in walking distance and you will experience the character of San Francisco much better when you explore it by foot. San Francisco is also known as the Rome of the US, as it is also built on seven hills. So be prepared for some more or less strenuous walks and leave your high heals at home – at least during the day!
Come hungry!
San Francisco offers some of the best cuisine in California. Check out the yummy seafood, try the authentic Chinese dishes in China town or endulge some of the local Californian wines. However, the best food is found off the beaten path, so stay away from places, where all customers wear “I Love San Francisco Sweaters”! If you want to try the famous Crabs on Fisherman’s Warf, eat them outside on the street. First of all, it is a great experience as you can watch how your crab is prepared and second, you can be assured that you get what you pay for. Most of the booths that sell fresh Crab also have a restaurant in the back, but there you will be squeezed on a small table and be cheated for your money!
Visit Sausolito
Take the ferry to Sausolito, one of the most picturesque cities in northern California. Just the ferry ride alone is definitely worth it. You will pass Alcatraz and have a stunning view of the skyline of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. When you arrive in Sausolito, you will feel more like in Southern France than in Northern California. The beautiful parks, winding streets, coffee shops and art galleries invite you for a nice stroll in the afternoon.
Bring warm clothes
If you plan on staying out after dark, remember to bring a thick jacket, as it gets very cold in the evenings, even in the summer time. Even in July, people wear thick sweaters and jackets in the evening as the temperatures drop after dark and the wind makes it feel even colder. If you forgot to bring warm clothes, check out the souvenir shops between Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Warf. There you can buy cheap jackets and sweaters, if you don’t mind wearing the same “San Francisco Sweater” as 50 % of the tourists there.
San Francisco really is a fascinating city with lots of options for everybody. Whether you are on a student budget or live like a king, San Francisco has something to offer for everybody. Check out this beautiful city and enjoy the unique spirit of San Francisco.
