San Diego is a very diverse city with lots of attractions and great neighborhoods with various events year round to keep you busy during your visit. But to have fun and stay busy in San Diego you do not always have to spend money. There are also quite a few free things to do in San Diego.
Free Things to Do in San Diego: Nature & Sport
You can easily enjoy the nature and get a bit of exercise for free during your visit of San Diego. There are various hikes all around town. Mission Trails Regional Park has many great hiking trails which are all fun, interesting and with beautiful views.
Cowles Mountain: As part of the Mission Trail Regional Park, this is a perfect hike for every one. Not to hard, not to steep, this hike can fit the need of various levels hikers; just take more time to get to the top if you need to. It gives you a really nice view of San Diego County. Parking at the bottom is free.
Torrey Pine State Reserve: is another great spot for hiking in San Diego. Just north of La Jolla, you can find different trails. There is a parking fee to enter the Reserve. However, depending on the hike you choose, you can find free parking around it.
If you don’t want to hike, you can also just ride your bike along the bay or take your roller skates and enjoy the ocean breath while cruising along the beach!
Fly fishing lessons: But there is more than just hiking in San Diego. Have you ever done fly fishing? Me neither. But to get a first taste, the San Diego Fly Fisher Club offers free lessons every Sunday morning at 9 am. Don’t worry about equipment, they will provide it free of charge, but you have to be there a bit earlier.
Free Things to Do in San Diego: Discover the City
The best way to discover a new city and to take advantage of all its attractions and sights is to walk around. There are quite a few places in San Diego, which are worth your time, and absolutely free for you to enjoy!
Walk around Old Town: This Mexican quarter of San Diego is very pleasant to walk through. You have a lot to see. Boutiques, little shops, Mexican restaurants, and diverse historic places can teach you a bit about the Mexican culture and the city itself. It almost feels like being in Mexico, but without the hassle of crossing the border.
Walk Around Coronado Island: This beautiful neighborhood is great to walk around, especially on a sunny spring or summer day. The houses are very charming, and most of the gardens splendid. You can also go admire the beach, one of the largest beaches in San Diego.
Free Harbor Tours around San Diego Bay: The Port of San Diego offers 2 hours tours to help you learn every thing about San Diego for free. You get to learn about the organization of the port itself but also history facts about the city while enjoying a beautiful view of San Diego Bay from the Ocean. After you enjoy the tour, you can walk around Seaport Village and check out all its boutiques.
Free Things to Do in San Diego: Art
Ray at night: Every second Saturday of the month, an art gallery event takes place on Ray Street in North Park. After 7 pm all the Art Galleries of the Street open their doors to introduce you to new and trendy artists, while welcoming you with drinks and goodies. Artists present their painting, sculptures, and ceramics. Music guides you through your walk. It is a great time to discover this San Diego neighborhood and art at the same time.
Taylor Guitar Factory Tour: Have you ever heard of one the finest Guitar makers in the US? Taylor Guitar. If you like music and if you are passionate about guitars you will find this free activity quite interesting. At 1 pm, between Monday and Thursday the factory offers free tours where you learn every step of the guitar making process.
Of course, you can also enjoy the San Diego beaches for free, or go fly a kite at the bay, and go watch the seals in La Jolla. Don’t forget to go walk around Balboa Park, go to the top of Mont Soledad for a great panoramic view of San Diego and drive to Anza Borrego or Julian to discover the behind the scene of San Diego County! Of course there are so many more fun free things to do, just maybe start with this!
