Memorial Day 2010 in Southern California

The Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner and you still have no idea how to welcome summer 2010? Here are some ideas of what you can do around our Fox Rent a Car locations in San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles. Whether you plan to travel to beautiful Southern California or live close by, some of the events we present to you may get you off your couches. If you are planning to visit Northern California on Memorial Day weekend, read our post about Memorial Day Getaways in Northern California.

Things to do on Memorial Day in San Diego:

Being a military town, San Diego offers a variety of events and ceremonies for the fallen soldiers. The probably most impressive event will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma. The Memorial Day Service starts at 10am and next to showing your respect to San Diego’s fallen ones, you can lose yourself in the impressive view from the Cemetery over Coronado, San Diego Downtown and Cabrillo Momument. Or, if you have not been there yet, visit the exhibition Japanese Americans in the Military at the Veterans Museum & Memorial Center. The exhibition will end on May 31st, so hurry up! More info and how to get there are on the Balbo Park website.

In Coronado, you can visit Coronado Star Park, where a ceremony will be held from 10am. Getting to Coronado that weekend plus finding parking may be tricky, so allow yourself enough time for both to be on time.

There are a number of fun things to do too this Memorial Day weekend in San Diego, you can find an awesome list here:

Things to do on Memorial Day in Orange County:

Orange County has a lot to offer this Memorial Day weekend. Services and Ceremonies are mostly held on May 28th in all major cities, such as Anaheim, Fullerton, and San Clemente. The Orange County City Guide provides you with a complete calendar so that you can choose where to go. Afterwards, you can spend the rest of the day on the beaches, stroll through the malls, go fishing or BBQ at your favorite park. For those of you who are in Anaheim on Memorial Day weekend, you can see Disneyland Park’s firework at 9.25pm every night.

Things to do on Memorial Day in Los Angeles:

Just a little up North from Orange County Memorial Day gets more culturally influenced. There is an art festival in Hermosa Beach, Cajun Creole Music Festival in Simi Valley, St. Nicholas Valley Greek Festival in Northridge, and the Annual Topanga Days Country Fair. Sounds like a lot of fun exploring music and arts, enjoying Greek food and entertainment!

Of course, there are also the obligatory Memorial Day Ceremonies, among others in Forest Lawn, where you can attend any of their Patriotic Memorial Day Program on May 31st. A detailed list of locations is on the Forest Lawn website.

Tell us your plans!

There are so many great things to do in Southern California Memorial Day weekend. If you can't escape to the lakes and go boating for that first weekend of summer, hit the beach. The OC has some great places (Laguna Beach, Dana Point). San Diego is always fun. Or head up to Santa Barbara and hit the beaches. Great beaches and other fun things to do. A great place to stay would be the Sandman Inn (www.thesandmaninn.com). Incredibly affordable and right in the heart of SB, you're close to everything worth visiting in SB.
