For many foreigners, especially for Europeans, the United States do not have any history. Luckily, this is only half of the story. There are indeed historic places, just not as old as the Europeans may expect! Fox Rent A Car presents the 6 most historic sites in Southern California:
1. Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego
One of the most historical sites you will find in San Diego is Cabrillo National Monument. It got built in 1913 but represents the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who guided the first European ships to this area. Besides the old Light House, you can see the monument, an exhibition about the landing, and of course enjoy the spectacular view!
2. William Heath Davis House in San Diego
Built in 1850, The William Heath Davis House is more than 150 years old and for a wooden construction, this is quite an age. It is located in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter and each room of the house presents the life of its former inhabitants, which include Alonzo Horton (San Diego’s founder), pre-civil war soldiers, and even from a German Spy! Get as close to the old times as you can!
3. San Luis Rey de Francia, Oceanside
The San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside, just a few miles North of San Diego downtown, is one of the oldest missions you will find in Southern California. In addition, it is also the largest one of 21 California missions. Definitely a place to see!
4. The Angels Flight railway in Los Angeles
This railway opened in 1901 and was used as an easy and convenient way to get to Bunkers Hill. In the late 1960’s, the railway was closed but proudly reopened its doors in 1996.
5. The Queen Mary in Long Beach
As the sister ship of The Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mary was built in the 1930s. For more than a decade it held the title for the fastest transcontinental trip. Later on, the Queen Mary got rebuilt for WW II, and even participated in the D-Day invasion. The ship retired in the late ‘60s and is open to visit, learn and entertain.
6. The Bradbury Building in Los Angeles
This is what you can call old: the Bradbury Building got constructed in 1893 and is full of mysteries and legends. From the outside, you will see the amazing style of the Italian Renaissance, from the inside you will get yourself into the game of light and shadows. The Bradbury Building served as a location for several movies, such as Quantum Leap, Blade Runner, Lethal Weapon 4, and Pushing Daisies.
The places may not be built in the 1500’s, but there is still a lot to see and enjoy, even for Europeans! Do you have any other historic places in Southern California which are definitely worth to visit? Let us know! We are glad to hearing from you.
