Fox Rent A Car Tip: Keep your House Safe while on Vacation

Summer time is vacation time. Vacation time means lots of unattended houses and just as many opportunities for someone to break into your place while you are on a trip. Statistics clearly show that burglaries go up drastically during the summer time, mostly due to open windows, and empty houses whose owners are on a trip. Fox Rent A Car has prepared a collection of safety tips for your house so that you can fully enjoy the summer vacation.

How to Keep your House Safe while on Vacation

Maybe the most important thing to do is to inform your neighbors (and only them, not the whole neighborhood!) that you are on vacation. Tell them your travel dates and ask to watch your house while you are not at home. They should also empty your mail box regularly to make sure that mail and newspapers are not sticking out, as this would show everybody that your house currently is unattended. If you fully trust your neighbors, give them a key to your house. If not, give the key to your friends and make sure the neighbors know the friends! Leave an emergency number where you get be reached.

Next, you must of course make sure too that burglars cannot easily get into the house. Lock all doors and windows, make sure that they are visible and not in a dark spot where someone has a good chance of not getting seen while breaking into your home. Set your alarm system! Don’t let someone from the outside see your valuables inside – nothing invites more to a robbery than jewelry on the living room table. The less you show the less interest someone may have to get into your house, just because it will take too long to find any valuables, and who knows what to find at all?

Make your house appear to be occupied. Either you leave the lights and A/C on permanently, or you should think about a timer system that lights turn on automatically. Eventually you want to leave on a TV or radio so that sounds and pictures make the impression of someone being at home. However, maybe your neighbors can turn on and off some entertainment system every other day, park their car in your driveway, or turn on and off the lights from time to time.

Keep your property illuminated, so that people don’t have an easy way to get close to your house without being seen in the dark. Get motion sensors or switches, and of course lock the door or gate to your property if possible.

You may also want to put your house phone on mute and the voice mail on silent. Nobody should hear that you are not answering the phone regularly as this easily tells that no one is at home.

You see, there are quite a few things that you can do to keep your house safe from break-ins while you are on vacation. Follow our tips, and make sure that only the right people know that you are gone. Don’t invite people to get into your place by leaving ladders or other equipment outside, you must store those items. For the worst case scenario, make sure your insurance is still valid and store your valuables and papers at a safe place.

If you follow theses guidelines, you should be pretty safe and Fox Rent A Car wishes you a great vacation! If you have any other tips how to keep your house safe while you are gone, let us know. We’d be happy to hear from you!
