Traveling itself already can be quite exhausting. Carrying heavy luggage, stress at the airport check in and getting to the gate on time, squeezing into the aircraft and eventually even having to deal with lost luggage is hard work. But what about those travelers who have a disability? Fox Car Rental knows that it is even harder for you to get to you destination and back home and we have prepared a checklist for you on how you can prepare to avoid travel stress.
Traveling with a Disability: Chose your destination carefully
If you decide to go on vacation, chose a location that you can feel comfortable with. Climbing the Chinese Wall is not an ideal plan if you cannot walk well or climb high steps. Pick a destination that fits with the climate, geography, mentality and your wallet!
Traveling with a Disability: Carefully select your accommodation
Most hotels offer special rooms on the ground floor for disabled guests. Make sure you include a remark in your reservation, and call the hotel or your travel agent in advance to make sure that you really are booked for such a room. Also, let the hotel staff or your travel agent know if you need anything special, such as extra towels or more pillows. This will make your stay as comfortable as you know it from home.
Traveling with a Disability: How to travel?
Are you fine traveling on an airplane, or do you prefer to take a car or a coach? Maybe you feel that going by train is most convenient for you? Depending on your preferences and of course of your destination, carefully pick your transportation. If you go by train or on an airplane, mention your disability when you book your tickets and request special seating. This will get you more leg room and you will be closer to the exit, allowing you to get on and off more easily and quickly.
Traveling with a Disability: Vacation Itinerary
Do not fully pack your itinerary if you know that you need a break from time to time! Do not forget that you are on vacation and not on a race, so allow yourself plenty of time for relaxation. If you are tired, return to your hotel and take a nap or watch some TV, or sit down in a park or café to get your stamina back. You may see less than you wanted to, so chose carefully what you really want to see and how much time it takes to do so. If you have some time left towards the end of the trip, you can still visit some of the extra places!
Traveling with a Disability: Coordinate with those who travel with you
To avoid travel stress with others due to your disability, always make sure that you coordinate your plans with those who travel with you. If they wish to go to a Theme Park, carefully decide whether you can really withstand hours of stress and excitement. Maybe it is better to go to a museum in the meantime? Only you can decide this, so make sure that everybody is fine with the decisions that are made. Of course, your travel companions will tailor their plans according to your wishes and abilities to make sure that you are together as much as you can.
Traveling with a Disability: Pack accordingly
Take the medication you need and put it into your carry-on luggage. Please get some advice from your airline about current travel regulations for passengers with disabilities, since they can tell you what you are allowed to take on board. Take clothing you need, some snacks, and special care items that you need. Take copies of your prescriptions and phone numbers you can reach your doctor at, who is familiar with your disability. Also take numbers of your family members, and let them know where you are going to!
Have a great vacation!
The Fox Rent A Car team wishes you a safe and enjoyable trip! Avoiding disability travel stress requires very good preparation to make sure that you can have a great vacation.
