6 Californian Beers You Shouldn’t Miss When You’re Near LAX

A road trip wouldn’t be a road-trip without a few beers, right?

And what’s better than drinking local brews?

California has some GREAT beers, and Phil Baxter, the real-beer-loving General Manager of the Four Points LAX laid on beer tasting and fish tacos at the Pool Bar for the bloggers on the Fox Road Trip.

The main bar – Brewsters – already stocks over 110 beers from around the world. This summer, Phil decided that Brewster’s Pool Bar would only serve “beer so fresh you have to slap it”. (Yep, that’s what it says on the menu.)

That means that the six beers on the specialty menu this summer are all brewed within ninety minutes of of the hotel, which is perfectly located for any trip to Los Angeles.

Try them yourself:

24th Street Pale Ale from Strand Brewing in Torrance

Their flagship beer. It’s a classic pale ale – slightly floral, slightly fruity and with a bitter finish.

Solidarity Black and Mild from Eagle Rock Brewery in LA

A deceptively dark beer. Deceptive because dark beers are typically heavy, but this is a light, mild, malt-accented beer that’s low in alcohol. Perfect for a summer’s day.

El Toro Trio Haferweizen from Cismontane Brewing in Rancho

Three grains, three brewers and three hops. Not quite a Hefewisen, hence the name. This is a complex beer with a banana nose, a hint of caramel and a sweet, creamy texture.

Happy Pils from Tustin Brewing in Tustin

A very light, crisp and refreshing lager. If you like the classic pilsners from central Europe, then you’ll like this one. A delicate hop flavor and slight spicy aroma. (My favorite, but don’t tell anyone.)

Golden Chaos from Bootlegger’s Brewery in Fullerton

This is a beer that lives up to its name – a Belgian-style Golden Ale brewed using the finest American rock candy. This has got just the right blend of fruity aroma and dry finish that makes it complex and chaotic on the palate.

Bavarian Style Wheat Ale from Black Market Brewing in Temecula

An award-winning example of an authentic, traditional Bavarian style beer. Only you don’t have to go to Bavaria to enjoy. Instead, you can just head to Brewster’s Pool Bar at the Four Points LAX

If you’re a fan of real ale, or even if you’re curious, hunt down Phil and his crew at the hotel near LAX. They have regular brewery nights at the hotel bar (the next one is on Friday June 10th – check out the event on Facebook.) Fore more information, Follow the Four Points LAX on Twitter.

I’ll be back next time I’m in LA. You can count on it.

Memorial Day Events in California

Memorial Day means many things to many people. It commemorates U.S. solider’s who’ve honorable died for their country. It also unofficially marks the beginning of summer, and it’s a day off of work. If you find yourself traveling to California this Memorial Day, here are some great events you should check out.

San Francisco

San Francisco

The thing to do on Memorial Day weekend is to go and see the traditional parade at the Presidio. The parade starts in the Main Post and ends at the San Francisco National Cemetery, where the Memorial Day ceremony takes places. Afterwards, feel free to stroll around on the Cemetery grounds and honor veterans and the fallen soldiers. You can see last years’ pictures here .For more information on how to get to the parade and where you can park your car, click here

Yosemite National Park

The park on the Memorial Day weekend may be crowded, but for a good reason. Spring is here! The snow is gone, flowers are blooming, the nature is awake and presents itself in the most beautiful and amazing ways you can imagine. Watch wild animals, hike through untouched nature, admire nature’s power. A drive to Yosemite National Park on the holiday weekend is definitely worth a second thought. You are want to go to Yosemite National Park, but not on the Memorial day Weekend? Find some handy tips when is the best time to visit.

Los Angeles

Just a little up North from Orange County Memorial Day gets more culturally influenced. There is an art festival in Hermosa Beach, Cajun Creole Music Festival in Simi Valley, St. Nicholas Valley Greek Festival in Northridge, and the Annual Topanga Days Country Fair. Sounds like a lot of fun exploring music and arts, enjoying Greek food and entertainment!

Of course, there are also the obligatory Memorial Day Ceremonies, among others in Forest Lawn, where you can attend any of their Patriotic Memorial Day Program. A detailed list of locations is on the Forest Lawn website.

San Diego

Being a military town, San Diego offers a variety of events and ceremonies for the fallen soldiers. The probably most impressive event will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma. The Memorial Day Service starts at 10am and next to showing your respect to San Diego’s fallen ones, you can lose yourself in the impressive view from the Cemetery over Coronado, San Diego Downtown and Cabrillo Monument.

In Coronado, you can visit Coronado Star Park, where a ceremony will be held from 10am. Getting to Coronado that weekend plus finding parking may be tricky, so allow yourself enough time for both to be on time.

My 3 Favorite California Destinations

Have you ever dreamed to switch your surfboard into a snowboard over night? Well you can! When you are in Southern California, the great advantage of the diverse landscape is that you can be at the beach in San Diego, Los Angeles or Orange County one day, and in the desert or mountains the next day.

Big Bear Mountain – California Destinations

Big Bear is only a 3 hours drive from San Diego, and a great change of décor in just a few hours. The drive up the mountain is preparing you for a different background. The palm trees are far behind, the colors changing and the houses are quite different. Big bear offers some exciting activities and attractions. Bear Mountain and Snow Summit Mountain are the two ski resorts in Big Bear California. All year long the two ski resorts here in Big Bear are great places to spend a couple days. During the summer, it is always nice to leave the warm beaches for a while and go enjoy the fresh air of the mountains. Ski lifts are open to bring you up the mountain and take you to nice hiking trails. In the winter you can enjoy the beautiful winter atmosphere in the white snow. The Snow Summit resort caters more to skiers, and Big Bear Mountain is a resort for snowboarders. You can enjoy the snow park and a few nice slopes. They both are small resorts, but still very impressive so close to the coast!

Palm Springs – California Destinations

When you are planing your weekend in Palm Springs you have 2 choices: make it a relaxing weekend getaway, sitting by the pool and taking things slow, or see and do as much to get your mind off of your job and discover what the desert has to offer. Golf is a favorite activity, yes, even in the desert. Let me inform you about some things you can’t do close to home! If you opted for a more active weekend, consider a nature adventure at the Palm Canyon of the Agua Caliente Indian Canyons. The scenery is worth the hike. Come enjoy the color contrast of the rocks, walk along the water, and learn about Indian art.

Now, if you prefer the relaxing side of a weekend escape in Palm Springs, you are at the right place. Palm Springs is one the best Spa destination of California. Most hotels offer spas package deals, and most of the accommodations found in Palm Springs are Spa Resorts. Palm Springs is home of one of the top 10 spas in the country: Parker Palm Springs Spa. This really is the deluxe version of all spas. If you are looking for something not as fancy, you have quite a list of Spas in Palm Springs to choose from.

San Clemente – California Destinations

Located at the very southern point of Orange County, CA, San Clemente is the best beach town escape away from the hustle and bustle of the cities. San Clemente flew under the radar until 1969 with President Richard Nixon purchased a home, nicknamed La Casa Pacifica. San Clemente boasts a mild climate, beautiful beaches, and that small town feel that’s hard to come by in neighboring cities. It’s the perfect relaxing location to dine, drink, explore and surf! They have great organic restaurants, quaint cafes, classic dive bars and even a winery.

What are your favorite California destinations? Agree or disagree with any? Let us know in the comments below!

Top 5 Destinations for California Wineries

California has some of the most unique geography in the country. It’s mild climate and fertile soil make California Wineries some of the best in the entire world. While everyone has heard of Napa Valley, there are several other California Wineries you should be aware of. Here are the top 5 destinations for California Wineries.

California Wineries in Sonoma

California Wineries in Sonoma

With 13 different viticultural areas, you bet you have a good choice in where to stop for a little wine tasting! But which are the most popular vineyards and wineries that you should not miss? You can start by deciding which wines you are interested in: Chardonay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Sauvignon or Merlot… and then select the wineries that produce these wines. Or you can just visit the most popular wineries of the Sonoma County. Benziger Family Winery is one of the most popular one for its garden and its great wines. It offers you a full experience. If you want to get a more European style visit, then you should go to the Chateau St Jean in Kenwood. Everything depends on the experience you are looking for.

California Wineries in Napa Valley

With picturesque views that have vineyards planted on slanting hills, a Napa Valley weekend getaway is actually a place you can visit at any time of the year. Even though you may have driven to this town, make sure that you rent a bicycle to take advantage of the numerous bike tracks and the scenic beauty that lines them. You can do a 10 mile trip to Yountville or a 30 mile one to Calistoga if you feel fit.
Obviously you have to stop by the vineyards for some interesting and rejuvenating wine tasting. The Artesa Winery offers a great view as you sip the refreshing wines too. You could also choose to take a sip out of the goblets at the Domaine Carneros or the Clos Du Val Winery.
While you are at the Napa Valley, you cannot afford to miss the Napa Valley Wine Train or the hot air balloon ride that the place offers. The best places to eat out here include Celadon and Zuzu.

California Wineries in Paso Robles

Small-town comfort and family-owned wineries make Paso Robles a relaxing, quaint year-round destination. Paso Robles is situated in California’s Central Coast, roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. And as you look at this AVA Map http://www.pasowine.com/ava-map/ it’s clear you have a ton of good choices. What makes Paso Robles such a great wine destination is the down-to-earth people, and lack of wine-snobbery that may be at some winery destinations. Even casual wine drinkers will have a great time relaxing at the vineyards and enjoying a wine tour.
Paso Robles wineries grow mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. However they’re also known for their great Zinfandels.
So where do start? One of my personal favorites, the Tobin James Cellars, is a great place to begin, and has one of the best tasting rooms.

California Wineries in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara Wine Country is divided in 4 different areas. In the Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the main productions. This area is also popular for golfing escapes. Cambria Winery is very popular for its wines selection and especially for the view. If you are looking for a more off the beaten path winery in Santa Barbara, you should visit the Kenneth Volk Vineyard in Foxen Cayon for a unique experience. Santa Inez Valley is home to most of the wineries of Santa Barbara Wine Country. If you like Cabernet and Merlot, you will enjoy this wine-growing area. The Santa Maria and Santa Inez Valley are the most important vineyard areas. Sta Rita Hills, which is on the Santa Inez Valley appellation, and Los Alamos Valley also grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. For a great picnic spot and a Pinot Noir degustation, Melville Vineyard in Sta Rita Hills offers you a great mediterranean touch. In Los Alamos, come enjoy your wine between the cattle ranches and farms at the Bedford Thompson Winery. As one of the largest in the region, this winery offers a interesting wine experience in a rustic setting.

California wineries in Temecula Wine Country

California Wineries in Temecula Wine Country

One of Temecula’s oldest wineries is the Mount Palomar Winery. It has been around since 1969 and offers the classic Bordeaux and Bordeaux blends. This winery also makes the most delicious port and a Solera Cream Sherry too. So make sure that you get a taste of these as well when you are on your tasting spree.

The South Coast Winery Resort and Spa offers you a chance to taste some tingling wines with a yoga twist. Even though this winery is a new kid on the block (the first bottling was in 2003) it has already won more than 400 awards. Given the popularity of yoga and wine tasting both, this is a place you might want to make prior reservations for.

The Thornton Winery gives you an opportunity to wine and dine at the same time. They are famous for their Brut Reserve and Cabernet-Merlot blend. Try getting here on a weekend and you will get a chance to attend the Champagne Jazz Concert Series.

What to do in Los Angeles on a budget

Beyond Rodeo Drive and Beverly Hills, there are countless other Los Angeles activities to explore. Here’s what to do in Los Angeles on a budget.

What to do in Los Angeles: Sightseeing on a budget

Get yourself a GO Los Angeles Card. You can buy this before you start on your trip and activate it when you use it for the first time. There is an option to buy a card that is valid for a day to those that are valid for the entire week. It is a good idea to plan your sightseeing before you buy the card so that you know that places that you want to see. The Hollywood CityPass that costs less than $50 allows admission to a large number of attractions related to the motion picture industry. Then there are other combinations that you can get that explore parks and museums and historic sites. Do not forget that some of the best LA attractions are for free too. The Getty Museum, a stroll down the Venice Beach, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, TV Show Taping, La Brea Tar Pits and the California Science Center are experiences that you would not want to miss.

What to do in Los Angeles: Venice Beach Boardwalk

Venice Beach Boardwalk a different world. It is crazy, over the top and loud, but definitely a must see, when you are in LA. You are surrounded by a mix of cultures, arts and creativity in a funky atmosphere. This place is like no other. You can also visit the Chinese Theater, but it is not free. While you are there, a lot of movie star impersonators  will try to get photographed with you; be aware, this isn’t free as well!

You can also hike to the Hollywood sign. Well technically not exactly to the sign, but close enough. The hills around it are accessible by car and some have small easy hiking trails to get you away from the houses and closer to the sign. You can really enjoy a great view of the city. Don’t forget to also check out Venice Beach and Olvera Street, it is free to cruise there and there is a lot of fun things to see, even if it is just for a walk by the ocean or people watching in Venice Beach or to observe a different culture on Olvera Street.

Top 5 Los Angeles Activities

The city of Angels has a little something for everyone. Here are the top 5 Los Angeles activities presented by Fox Rent A Car.

Los Angeles Activities: Getty Center

Santa Monica is home of the the Getty Center. This museum has gathered an impressive collection of the 20th century European and American Art. So make sure to have it at the top of you “things to do in Los Angeles” list! And the best thing about it: Admission is free! All you have to pay is for parking ($ 10/car/day).

There are quite a few reasons to visit the Getty Center in LA.
1- You should visit the Getty Center in Los Angeles because of its architecture. As mentioned previously, this museum is not ordinary and attracts a lot of interest from architect aficionados. The architecture doesn’t just cover just the building and its odd set up, but the landscape surrounding it as well. The garden attached to the Getty Center in Los Angeles is quite a piece of art itself. You will need some time to fully enjoy the museum but also its garden! You can pretty much plan a full day there!
2- You should visit the Getty Center in Los Angeles because of its location. Situated on the Santa Monica Mountains, a hill of 900 feet, the Getty Center offers one the most beautiful views of the city. The panoramic view itself is worth the trip! Los Angeles Activities in Venice Beach presented by Fox Rent A Car

Los Angeles Activities: Venice Beach Boardwalk

Venice Beach Boardwalk a different world. It is crazy, over the top and loud, but definitely a must see, when you are in LA. Los Angeles Activities: Shopping

Now, what good would your trip to Los Angeles be if you did not shop around in the city? Known for shopping centers and outlets to die for, this city has the greatest collection of designer wear dresses, handbags, footwear and accessories. Planning your shopping trip might be a good idea if you want to enjoy your retail therapy to the fullest.
To make the best of the time that you have, plan your shopping sprees based on the neighborhood that you are in.

Rodeo Drive or The Golden Triangle, the place where Julia Robert’s had her own shopping spree in ‘Pretty Woman’, is home to designer stores including Tiffany’s, Chanel, Baly, Gucci, and more. However, the price tags of almost all the items in this area are likely to touch the roof. So window shopping is what you might consider here.
Robertson Blvd is where you can find modern outfits from Curve, discount outlets from Maxfield, an Industry Mac store along with a Georgio Armani Home store. Shoes from Hogan or a gift from Kitson’s is also something that you might consider while walking down this area.

Los Angeles Activities: Family restaurants

Nothing can spoil a dinner more than a kid that refuses to eat anything and throws a tantrum for having to sit still in one place for a long time. Choosing a kid friendly restaurant makes imminent sense when going out with family.

Top 5 Things to do in Orange County

If you’re looking for the perfect family vacation or romantic getaway, Orange County should be at the top of your list! Originally beginning as a Los Angeles County, the “OC” has grown into it’s own over the last few decades. Here are the top 5 things to do in Orange County.

Things to do in Orange County: Beaches

While the coastline offered by the state is large and each beach boasts of something unique, the Orange county beaches are a ‘must-visit’ for all. When you drive over to Orange County, take time off to visit the Seal Beach, Surfside, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Dana Point, San Clemente and the Sunset Beach. The beaches in these areas offer the quaint peacefulness and you can avoid the extreme crowds that you may otherwise encounter in other locations.

Things to do in Orange County: Shopping

Some of you might be interested in a shopping break. It is always fun to go shopping somewhere different, find stores, trend, and styles you don’t have at home. Orange County is home of one of the greatest malls of California, Fashion Island. It is a total new experience. The mall is quite elegant, ocean views, great outdoor settings, and more than 200 stores… now that’s shopping in Southern California!

Things to do in Orange County: Theme Parks

When talking about things to do in Orange County, Disneyland cannot be given a miss. At the southern end of LA in Orange County this is a completely different world on its own. Located about 20 miles south of downtown LA in the city of Anaheim, the park stays open from 10am to 6pm almost every day. There are special days when it stays open till midnight in winter too. While you are here, you can also explore California Adventure, a park for the adventurous with an airborne tour of the Golden State.
Disneyland is one of the number one reasons for planning a weekend getaway in Orange County. This can fill a whole day, and assures you a lot of fun. We recommend, if your budget allows it, to get the 2 park pass, so you can also enjoy California Adventure. The Parade at the end of the day is always fun, and if you want to do most of the parks attractions in one day, this will be a late night.

Things to do in Orange County: Sports

Orange County is home to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and the Anaheim Ducks. Both teams are former champions and are consistently among the top teams in their leagues. Best of all, their stadiums are only about 10 minutes apart, so it’s easy to catch a game at both!

Things to do in Orange County: Catalina Island

Catalina Island, the romantic island of the coast of Orange County and Los Angeles is another worthy day trip. You can take the regular ferry, a fast boat or even fly in by helicopter to reach the island of Catalina. There are no cars on Catalina, so if you want to explore the whole island, you should rent a little golf cart to drive around. But the main attractions are easily reached by foot. Check out the casino or book an undersea tour, where you can see the amazing fishes and corals without getting wet. You can read more about Catalina Island here!
