The Top 5 Theme Park Rides in the US

Coming up with a list of the 20 best theme park rides in the US is easy. Narrowing this down to just 5? Now that’s tough! The best theme park rides tell some kind of a story, have innovative or extraordinary motion effects and comfortable, safe ride vehicles. If you are familiar with theme parks, you won’t be surprised to see Disney attractions dominating this list. With a gift for storytelling, a love for innovation and the budget to make big dreams a reality, Disney has all of the elements needed to make a great ride.

5. Star Tours: The Adventures Continue (Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland)

Debuting just in time for Star Wars Weekends in May 2011, the newly revised version of Star Tours has everything a rider could want. A familiar story with beloved Star Wars characters, exhilarating action sequences and the ability to offer a different ride experience each time.

The new Star Tours is still a simulator, but the motion is much smoother and better integrated than before. Expect to come face to face with some of your favorite characters from the Star Wars universe, including Darth Vader, Yoda and Princess Leia. With over 50 different ride combinations, you can ride Star Tours again and again without having the same experience twice.

4. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man (Universal’s Islands of Adventure)

Is it real? That’s the question you’ll ask yourself again and again as you wind your way through the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man. Even experienced theme park thrill riders are hard pressed to figure out just how some of the truly amazing effects of this ride are produced.

Expect awe inspiring special effects, from the moment Spidey himself lands on your car with a thump until the thrilling high speed drop from atop a tall building. This ride employs motion base technology with 3D movie footage, perfectly blending the action and motion – you’ll feel like you’re really soaring alongside Spider-Man. Universal is set to update this already amazing attraction in 2012, so plan accordingly if you are heading to the Orlando area and want to take this one in.

3. Splash Mountain (Disney’s Magic Kingdom)

One of Disney’s classic rides is still one of its best. Riders board a hollowed out log and join Brer Rabbit on journey that only Disney could do justice to. From whimsical touches and details (note the hanging chipmunk laundry near the top of the mountain) to the signature drop into the briar patch, Splash Mountain delivers everything you could want from a theme park ride.

Splash Mountain is an excellent gateway ride for little ones that are tall enough to begin riding thrill rides, but may not be emotionally ready. Combining a healthy dose of music, whimsy and fun with the thrills, your child’s reaction to Splash Mountain is a good gauge for measuring how ready they are to tackle other big thrill rides in the park.

2. Curse of DarKastle (Busch Gardens Williamsburg)

Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia is home to several amazing roller coasters and rides, and the Curse of DarKastle tops them all. The park is already a great destination for thrill seekers, with great coasters such as the uniquely diving Griffon, but DarKastle is the park’s must-ride experience.

Housed in the Germany section, this forbidding Gothic Castle is home to a ride that combines 4D technology with some supercharged action sequences. DarKastle combines the best elements from traditional motion simulators and 3d movie rides, and adds in a few extra twists and turns along the way, making it a top pick for any ride aficionado.

1. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (Universal Orlando)

If you could only choose one ride on this list, pick this one. Harry Potter and the Forbidden journey seamlessly blends video and ride technology into an experience even the most committed muggle can enjoy. Getting to the ride is part of the fun, as you make your way through Hogsmeade and then Hogwarts Castle itself. The line area can be so captivating that guests actually forget to move on to the ride itself.

Once you board your “enchanted bench” you’ll be whisked away on a magical journey via the Flue Network. In addition to escaping a boring class lecture, you’ll be treated to some traditional (and some the not so traditional) roller coaster moves. While the coaster here is not as wild as some, the atmosphere, visual thrills and overall experience make this one of the most innovative rides in the United States.

Vintage Florida – the Sunshine State’s Most Historic Cities

Some may think there is nothing more to Florida than Miami’s gleaming glass towers or the condo complexes of Fort Myers Beach, but vacationers to the Sunshine State can also experience superb historic neighborhoods, an array of cultural diversions and the sedate, vintage style on offer in old world towns like Key West. Here is a brief look at five of Florida’s top historic cities.

Tampa

One of the jewels of the windswept Gulf Coast, Tampa is known more for its modern suburbs and beautiful bay, but it has a wealth of heritage charms dating back to the incorporation of the city in 1849. And it’s in the Ybor City district where you can discover Tampa at its best, with dozens of protected historic buildings, structures and monuments. A well-tended State Park, and the sprawling Cigar Museum, are amongst the highlights to be seen here, while 7th Avenue boasts an eclectic range of restaurants and eateries. Historic TECO line trams also run through this area, adding to the traditional and wholesome appeal of Ybor City. What’s more, if you find yourself in the Tampa area during the New Year festivities, check out the Marching Band Show at the Raymond James Stadium, where many of America’s best high school students assemble in a gigantic battle of the bands.

St. Augustine

Nicknames like ‘Ancient City’ and ‘Old City’ should tell you all you need to know about St. Augustine, one of the oldest and best preserved cities in the state. Founded as far back as 1565, America’s oldest city hosts colonial era attractions such as Fort Matanzas National Monument, the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, Markland Mansion and the Hotel Alcazar. For an enchanting late afternoon stroll, take a walk around the Lincolnville National Historic District, a charming 19th century neighborhood with almost 548 historic buildings.

Apalachicola

Not all of Florida’s historic cities are big, bustling towns; for something a little more peaceful, and to get back in touch with nature, head to Apalachicola, a historic waterfront settlement right on the Gulf Coast. Known for a romantic board-walk, beautiful old mansions and a relaxed pace of life, this idyllic community is a genuine slice of small town America. Transport yourself back in time and enjoy locally harvested oysters and freshly caught shrimp at one of the town’s welcoming restaurants, or take a boat out to one of the nearby islands for a secluded picnic.

Key West

The southernmost city in the continental United States is also one of the most alluring and seductive, playing host to late night jazz bars, old fashioned cocktail houses and a vibrant food scene. Famed for literary residents like Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams, Key West may bring out your literary side, and is renowned for great bookshops and libraries. Stop in at the town’s original Sloppy Joe’s bar to see where the author of The Grapes of Wrath used to hang out. Those on senior class trips should pay a visit to Hemingway’s old house, lovingly restored and inhabited by a breed of seven-toed cats descended from Hemingway’s very own pet Snowball. Most of all, make sure not to miss the small red and black buoy on South Street; this modest monument represents the southernmost point of the continental United States, and is one of the most photographed landmarks in Florida. Check out the sign which shows that Key West lies a mere 90 miles from Cuba, making it closer to Fidel Castro’s Communist stronghold than it is to Miami.

Marianna

Located amidst the natural beauty of the Florida Panhandle, Marianna offers a pleasing small-town vibe with enough history to keep you interested. A vibrant Main Street boasts traditional timber housing, arts and craft stores and furniture shops all selling a unique brand of Southern charm. Yet Marianna is perhaps best appreciated as a base for exploring nearby wildernesses such as the Florida Caverns State Park, a warren of caves, natural limestone formations and rich forests of jaw-dropping beauty.

John is a budding travel writer, with a passion for everything from a great Marching Band Show to the best in Cajun cuisine.

Disney World’s Spectacular Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary Resort is the original flagship hotel for the Walt Disney World Resort complex. Built in 1971 by U.S. Steel Corporation and famous architect William Beckett (UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica Civic Center), it stands today as one of Disney’s most sought after resorts.

Disney World Contemporary Resort

The Contemporary Resort is one of three luxury resorts built along the Walt Disney World monorail system. Along with the Grand Floridian and Polynesian, the three beautiful properties comprise what are known as “the monorail resorts” by frequent visitors.

Spacious Accommodations

The Contemporary has received several facelifts in its long existence, including recent room remodels and the addition of The Bay Lake Tower, which represents the first Disney Vacation Club offering along the monorail.

The main building is the unmistakable A-Frame tower which can be seen from several miles away. The monorail runs through this massive structure into what Disney calls the “Grand Canyon Concourse.” The building houses over 500 guest rooms, several restaurants including the world famous California Grill, a brand new arcade, and numerous shops.

The rooms are spacious and clean, and offer a subtle yet unmistakable Disney theme. Suites are available to accommodate a larger number of guests per party. The only complaint I can think of is that there is a decided lack of private balconies, which can be found at many of the Disney luxury resort properties.

Location, Location, Location!

The main reason to choose The Contemporary over the many fine luxury hotels comprising the huge Walt Disney World resort complex is its close proximity to the Magic Kingdom theme park.

The Magic Kingdom is only a 10 minute walk from most of the Contemporary buildings. If walking is not an option, the monorail can get you there and back in minutes. Our family is known to ride the monorail because the trip is so fun. Usually theme park transportation is not something guests look forward to. But riding the monorail and seeing the various beautiful resorts, and getting an excellent view of the Magic Kingdom, is a ton of fun. Your kids will love it, and so will you!

While the Grand Floridian and Polynesian resorts offer the same access to the monorail system, the Contemporary is considerably less expensive most times of the year. This is important for any family on a budget, as it is easy to drop a few thousand dollars in a week once you factor in park tickets and meals.

Free Entertainment

Another plus is the free entertainment offered to guests. A huge pool area will keep you cool and happy under the Florida sun. During the busy season, there are nightly fireworks from the Magic Kingdom which are viewable from the Contemporary resort. It’s a nice experience sitting pool side with your friends and family, watching night time fireworks without having to fight the theme park crowds.

Also during the busy season, an electric light parade floats across the water. This generally occurs shortly after the fireworks finish. It’s a little cheeky, but in a fun Disney sort of way. I always giggle when I see it, and the kids absolutely love it.

A Lot to See and Do

Our family has stayed at Walt Disney World many times, and over the years we have found that there is plenty more to do than run amok in the theme parks.

Besides the monorail system, you can travel around the monorail resorts and also to the breathtaking Wilderness Lodge resort via boat. The boats launch every 10 to 15 minutes, and offer a relaxing ride across Bay Lake. If you time it right, you can even watch the fireworks and electric light show from the boat.

I’ve spent an entire day riding across Bay Lake, visiting the many resorts. Whether you want to shop, take photographs, or just sight-see, the Disney resort complex offers plenty to do besides hang out in the theme parks.

Summary

The Contemporary resort is the perfect location for fans of the Magic Kingdom. The resort is a short walk to the Magic Kingdom gates, and there are transportation options available to anyone who needs it. Of the three monorail resorts, the Contemporary is generally the least expensive option. If you go, make sure you block off time to relax by the pool and stroll around the resort grounds.

Have fun at Disney!

4 Disney World Tips for Your Next Trip

A trip to Disney World can mean a new experience for people, even if they have been to a dozen amusement parks previously.

With modern technology that gives way to animatronics and photo opportunities with Disney characters, there is always something to seek out.

People that visit are not referred to as customers, but guests. Employees are known as cast members; this is only the beginning of what you may notice that helps Disney stand out from the competition.

To help make your holiday even more enjoyable, the tips below may help.

4 Disney World Tips for Your Next Trip

1. Choose the Time of Your Visit Carefully

As with many other holiday destinations, some months or days of the year will be more crowded than others. If you do not like to have too many people around you, make sure that you are aware of special occasions that America observes. Labour Day Weekend and Halloween, for example, are more likely to be busy and thus frustrating. The time that you have to spend in queue to be let on a ride can be extended significantly, and making reservations at a restaurant may also prove difficult. Avoid waiting until the last minute to plan.

2. Differentiate Your Child’s Stroller

Because a lot of families go to Disney World, you can expect to see a lot of small children being pushed around in strollers. Some people, if they do not live too far away, bring their own strollers. However, many others choose to rent a stroller from Disney before they enter a park. These strollers are very similar and it is easy to lose track of your own. For this reason, it is important that you make your own stroller stand out. You can do this by attaching a piece of cloth to a handle. If this is not possible, a parent or older child can stand by the stroller while somebody goes on a ride or gets food.

3. Plan Ahead For Hot Days

When walking around a Disney park – particularly Animal Kingdom – a person can feel very hot very quickly. They may start to sweat and lose their enthusiasm or ability to walk. It is important for at least one member of the party to bring along water for people to drink. There are many cooling areas in the Disney parks, but it is still important to remain hydrated. If possible, the water should be taken from the hotel room sink or at a local store outside of the parks; otherwise the cost to get bottled water can be high. People should drink even if they are not thirsty, to avoid problems later down the line.

4. Use Caution When Looking At Souvenirs

Because souvenirs in the Disney parks can be expensive, only buy what you really want and can realistically fit into your luggage. Some people purchase a lot out of excitement, but this can lead to regret and should be noted.

A More Relaxing Disney World Vacation

Too many Disney fans I know return from Disney World needing a vacation, after their vacation. As much as we love Disney World, our family has found that the daily grind of rushing to featured attractions at early park openings, fighting the crowds at meal time, and braving the Florida heat makes a Disney trip seem less like a vacation and more like a competition.

What I propose is a far more relaxing plan for visiting the parks. You will enjoy your stay, have ample relaxation time, fight crowds less, and even save money. In this article I will explain how our family prefers to visit Disney World, and how we make our vacations more fun and relaxing.

10-Day Park Hopper

Probably the most important of all our tips, we prefer to purchase the 10-Day Park Hopper tickets with the no expiration option added. If you are not familiar with Disney World ticket options, that last sentence probably just blew your mind! Sorry about that. Let me explain.

Disney offers a ticket called the “Park Hopper” which allows guests to get into any Disney World park that day on a single ticket. So for instance you could start your morning in The Magic Kingdom, and finish up at the Epcot World Showcase for dinner and fireworks.

Disney sells its Park Hopper tickets in lengths from 1-day to 10-day packages. The more days you choose to purchase, the cheaper the price per day. For a nominal fee, you can add on a “No Expiration Option” to each ticket, which means of course that they never expire. Otherwise you will need to use your tickets within 14 days of purchase.

We choose to purchase the 10-day ticket even if we only plan on spending 5 days in the park because the cost is not much more at all ($516 for 10 days versus $366 per 5 days). This allows us to bring the tickets back with us for a future trip, and still have 5 days of park fun left at no additional cost.

Stay On Site

Disney World offers a large choice of on property resorts at which to stay. They fall under the categories of Value, Moderate, and Luxury. As you might imagine, the price points for each increase significantly. The Value resorts (including the All Stars) are competitively priced with budget hotels off property. The moderate resorts are priced similar to a higher end hotels. And the luxury resorts are pricey, but absolutely stunning.

We have stayed at Disney World resorts from each category and have never been disappointed. The grounds are beautiful, and 24-hour security keeps the area safe for family and children. You won’t have to worry about paying for parking at the theme parks, or fighting traffic on your way in and out. Disney provides free transportation to and from the parks to all its resorts. It’s a huge convenience, as well as a money saver.

Parks Every Other Day

Kick up the relaxation quotient by dividing your 10 days of park tickets over two trips, then make reservations to stay twice as long if you can afford it. For instance, make a reservation for 10 nights at the Value category All Star resorts, then spend 5 days in the park. If you cannot afford to stay 10 nights, how about 8 nights with 4 days spent in the park?

Spending every other day out of the parks enjoying your resort will completely recharge your family. The hustle and heat of the parks requires some time away to keep the vacation relaxing. Ordering burgers or dessert and drinks from pool side while soaking up the Florida sun will make you wonder why anyone spends all their time in the parks, when so much free entertainment is offered as part of the resort experience.

Disney resorts make it worth your while. All Disney resorts have a pool area, and many are almost miniature water parks complete with large slides and waterfalls. The beautiful resort grounds are meant to be explored, and many have long paths which are great for morning and evening strolls.

Bring a Sandwich or Burger Maker

Eating in your resort room not only saves you a lot of money, it also makes for a more relaxing trip. Just a few meals in the room rather than at a restaurant or in the parks can make all the difference. You don’t have to fight crowds, and you won’t have to worry about reservations.

We like to bring a small Foreman grill or a sandwich maker with us. Most Disney resorts have small refrigerators but only the expensive villas have kitchens. So you will need a way to cook your meals. You can easily fit a sandwich maker into a suitcase. A little creativity will allow for many meals with this one device.

A small, lightweight microwave is also a good idea too. But check ahead first to see if your resort room has a microwave included.

Conclusion

We used to return from Disney World physically, mentally, and monetarily spent. Not anymore. By making simple changes to where we stay, how often we visit the parks, and by bringing a few helpful items along with us, our Disney World vacations are more relaxing and fulfilling. The next time you visit the Disney World resort complex, take the time to smell the flowers. You will be glad you did.

Daniel Padavona is a fan of all-things Disney. When he is not in the parks, you can find him teaching others how to save money on their vacations and enjoy their trips more. Daniel is the founder of Warmpicture, which licenses high quality royalty-free vacation photos.

5 Rides You Don’t Want to Miss in Disney World

Walt Disney World is known as the “Most Magical Place on Earth,” so it’s not surprising that they are so much more than just an amusement park.

Even if you’ve been to other theme parks, you’ll find details on rides and innovation at Disney like you’d never expect.

Here are some of the most exciting, unique rides that you can experience at Disney World:

5 Disney World Rides You Don't Want to Miss
Image courtesy of West Chester Dumonts

1. Kilimanjaro Safaris

Located in the Animal Kingdom, this ride gives you the chance to experience an African safari without actually being in Africa.

You’ll travel through various terrains and areas on board a tram driven by a Disney employee and see a wide variety of animals.

Your guide will point out interesting things to you and teach you about the animals as you go past elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos, warthogs, and many more!

2. Mission: Space

Ever wanted to know what it would feel like to get in a rocket ship and blast off into outer space?

Mission: Space is a ride that comes close to capturing what that experience is really like. In fact, the ride is so intense that they’ve now created a less intense side.

Everyone on the ride has a “job,” such as navigator, and you travel together to Mars.

3. Tower of Terror

Perhaps you’ve been on a free fall drop before, but you’ve never done it like this.

One of the great things the Tower of Terror has going for it is the theme – you’re in a creepy old hotel elevator that has come right out of the Twilight Zone.

When you get to the top, right before the fall, the doors open up briefly and you can look out at the park and whatever else is 13 stories below you. Then be prepared for a wild ride.

You’ll be dropped more than once and how often and how far changes every time you ride, so you always get a different experience.

4. Rockin’ Roller Coaster

Disney doesn’t have many intense roller coasters, but if you’re a fan of coasters then this is the one that you don’t want to miss.

The ride power launches you onto an indoor track, where you’ll do loops and twists all while Aerosmith music is blasting in your ears. The ride is in darkness with the exception of some neon signs and lights.

5. Splash Mountain

This log flume ride is a classic located at the Magic Kingdom.

It’s based on a little known Disney movie called Song of the South. You travel through the story of Brer Rabbit and his friends for the first five minutes of the ride before finally coming to be the big plunge at the end.

If it’s a hot day try to snag a seat in the front row so you can cool down from the splash!

Live the Jimmy Buffett Lifestyle During Your Florida Vacation

Jimmy Buffett successfully morphed from a struggling country musician into one of the best-known performers in the world, thanks to his tropical Florida lifestyle. Buffett first began establishing his easygoing “beach bum” persona in the early 1970s, when he moved from Tennessee to Key West. The rest, as they say, is history.

Escape Reality on Your Trip to Florida

Hands down, Buffett’s most popular hit would have to be 1977’s Margaritaville, which first appeared on the album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes. Its lyrics, which describe “wastin’ away again” on the lime green cocktail, define the laid-back, escape-to-the-islands lifestyle that has since become Buffett’s multi-million dollar niche. His concert tours sell out every summer and he typically performs barefoot. His fans, which are known as Parrotheads, tailgate in the parking lot for hours before his shows begin.

You don’t have to be a Parrothead (or a heavy drinker) to appreciate the message that Buffett’s music portrays—just about everyone wants to escape reality every now and then! It’s become incredibly easy to live the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle during your Florida vacation thanks to Buffett himself. He owns a successful chain of Margaritaville restaurants, three of which are in Florida.

Key West

The original Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville restaurant and retail store opened in Key West, Florida in 1985. It’s conveniently located on Duvall Street, Key West’s famous road which runs north and south from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. When you’re on Duvall, you can also swing by Sloppy Joe’s, the famous bar that Ernest Hemingway frequented when he lived on the island, and don’t forget to head over to Mallory Square for the Key West sunset celebration. Local artists and musicians are abundant during the sunset festivities, and it’s a safe bet that you’ll have an experience that you remember forever!

Orlando

Like tropical music and theme parks? Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Orlando is conveniently located in Universal CityWalk, the entertainment and retail district that’s adjacent to Universal Studios and Universal Islands of Adventure. After you grab a bite to eat and check out all of the Buffett-esque paraphernalia that’s for sale in the gift shop, be sure to stroll around City Walk. It’s also home to the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, the Hard Rock Café, Pat O’Brien’s Bar, and more.

Panama City Beach

The most recent Margaritaville in Florida opened at Panama City Beach’s Pier Park in 2008. Pier Park offers over 1 million square feet of shopping and entertainment, a perfect pit stop on your Florida vacation. Want to take the Jimmy Buffett lifestyle to the next level? No problem, the Margaritaville Beach Hotel opened in 2010. The hotel, which occupies 800 feet the Gulf of Mexico, offers a “barefoot elegance” motif with 162 guest rooms. Expansion plans are already in the works!
