The Road Tripper’s FOX Hotel Scorecard: Napa’s River Terrace Inn

River Terrace Inn

As myself and my three Fox Road Trip blogging partners head from destination to destination along the West Coast we’ve had the opportunity to stay at quite a few hotels. And with that we’ve gained quite an expertise in what makes a great hotel for the traveling road tripper.

And so, I’ve created a list of 10 categories that hotels can be outstanding at. Of these ten, I pick out the three that each hotel knocks out of the park and I’ll tell you a little bit about why they really stood out to us.

Today, we’re going to look at Napa Valley’s very own River Terrace Inn, a beautiful spot just blocks from the quaint historical downtown and a few miles from the rolling hills and beautiful valleys that make up the vineyards of what I have to say is one of America’s most prized possessions.

The Ten Categories are as follows:

1.)    THE LOCATION: Is it in a convenient location in terms of the town’s attractions?

2.)    THE AMBIANCE: How’s the hotel condition? What’s the vibe? Is it depressed and tired or happy and welcoming? How does it make you feel when you’re inside of it?

3.)    CLEANLINESS: How clean are the rooms? Is there nasty stuff in the sink or hairs in the bed upon arrival? Is the mirror spotless and is the bed made with right angles in every corner possible?

4.)    HOTEL SERVICE: Is the staff nice, welcoming, and helpful? Or do they give the vibe that the guest is just a pain in the butt?

5.)    PERKS THAT SAY WE LOVE OUR GUESTS: What extra good stuff does the hotel offer? Is it a delicious breakfast in the morning? A free shuttle ride downtown? Is there a workout room or a pool? A free happy hour?

6.)    THE OTHER GUESTS: Is the hotel more suited for the traveling business man, the family on vacation, the budget traveler, the luxury traveler, or the road tripping social media addicts ;-)

7.)    WORK AREAS: As a writer and entrepreneur, it’s important for me to have areas in the room to do work (aka..desk area) and a nice lobby with mixed used space to plug in.

8.)   FLEXIBILITY: All guests need certain extra little things… late check-outs, early check-ins, bag storage, cab assistance etc.

9.)    BREAKFAST: This is the most important meal of the day!!! Is the hotel helping us make the most of our day and health?

10.) WELL-ROUNDED-REVIEW: Overall, on a scale of 1-10 how was the hotel based on all the categories.

THE TOP 3 for the RIVER TERRACE IN OF NAPA VALLEY:

NUMBER ONE: NAPA AMBIANCE

The-Terrace-Inn-21-150x150

Upon walking into the hotel you’re greeted with a wide open lobby that stretches from the entry way to the back patio where there are tables and a large fire pit. Unfortunately I never got around to relaxing by the fire with a chilled beer, but I definitely could envision myself doing it! Just beyond the patio were benches that looked out upon a calm river, perfect for sipping a glass of wine that you can get from the friendly server standing behind the beautiful, dark wood bar.

The lobby itself is meant for relaxing. In fact, after we finished our Wine Train tour (which was fabulous by the way!) I fell asleep for an hour in what I will always remember as the most comfortable chair I’ve ever napped in. (Yes, I know lobbies aren’t meant for this… the rooms we stay in are… but I just couldn’t help myself!)

The ambiance of this hotel was exactly what I’d imagine of a Napa Valley getaway: relaxing, welcoming, and sophisticated in a leisurely way… the exact kind of place where having a few glasses of Napa’s best reds and whites.

NUMBER TWO: LOCATION – THE HEART OF NAPA

The River Terrace in is a half a mile away from the historical downtown of Napa Valley, a half a mile from the amazing Oxbow Public Market that will remind you of a mall cafeteria that instead of burgers offers wine and artisan cheese, gourmet tacos,  organic ice cream, steamed oysters paired with white wine, and a whole lot more.

What about the wine, you ask? I was just getting to that! In a 2 minute walk you’re at the starting station for the world-famous Napa Wine Train Tour (a must do!). You can also take a right out of the hotel and head straight to the winding, hilly roads that lead you through the vineyards if you want to do a little exploring yourself.

The location couldn’t have been better!

NUMBER THREE: A PLACE TO SET UP SHOP – WORK SPACE

The-Terrace-Inn-8-150x150

I have to say that while this hotel is really perfect for the vacationing couple or family, it served it’s purpose perfectly for me as a writer. The mobile office is crucial!

The desk in the room was fitted with yet another unbelievably comfortable chair and the wireless was flawless. The lobby offered all kinds of tables for work as well as a few couches to relax and get into writing.

And if you’re not a writer, I’d say that you’d rave about the same thing if you’d like to dive into a good book or skim a magazine or just relax with a coffee and chat.

THANKS RIVER TERRACE INN

I definitely plan on heading back to Napa Valley after the #Foxroadtrip is finished, and when I do, I know exactly where I’ll be staying! And while I only highlighted my top three of the ten, I can hands down say that I could have raved about each and every one of them when it comes to this fabulous Napa hotel.

Memorial Day Events in California

Memorial Day means many things to many people. It commemorates U.S. solider’s who’ve honorable died for their country. It also unofficially marks the beginning of summer, and it’s a day off of work. If you find yourself traveling to California this Memorial Day, here are some great events you should check out.

San Francisco
Image courtesy of Mattia Boero Photography

San Francisco

The thing to do on Memorial Day weekend is to go and see the traditional parade at the Presidio. The parade starts in the Main Post and ends at the San Francisco National Cemetery, where the Memorial Day ceremony takes places. Afterwards, feel free to stroll around on the Cemetery grounds and honor veterans and the fallen soldiers. You can see last years’ pictures here .For more information on how to get to the parade and where you can park your car, click here

Yosemite National Park

The park on the Memorial Day weekend may be crowded, but for a good reason. Spring is here! The snow is gone, flowers are blooming, the nature is awake and presents itself in the most beautiful and amazing ways you can imagine. Watch wild animals, hike through untouched nature, admire nature’s power. A drive to Yosemite National Park on the holiday weekend is definitely worth a second thought. You are want to go to Yosemite National Park, but not on the Memorial day Weekend? Find some handy tips when is the best time to visit.

Los Angeles

Just a little up North from Orange County Memorial Day gets more culturally influenced. There is an art festival in Hermosa Beach, Cajun Creole Music Festival in Simi Valley, St. Nicholas Valley Greek Festival in Northridge, and the Annual Topanga Days Country Fair. Sounds like a lot of fun exploring music and arts, enjoying Greek food and entertainment!

Of course, there are also the obligatory Memorial Day Ceremonies, among others in Forest Lawn, where you can attend any of their Patriotic Memorial Day Program. A detailed list of locations is on the Forest Lawn website.

San Diego

Being a military town, San Diego offers a variety of events and ceremonies for the fallen soldiers. The probably most impressive event will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma. The Memorial Day Service starts at 10am and next to showing your respect to San Diego’s fallen ones, you can lose yourself in the impressive view from the Cemetery over Coronado, San Diego Downtown and Cabrillo Monument.

In Coronado, you can visit Coronado Star Park, where a ceremony will be held from 10am. Getting to Coronado that weekend plus finding parking may be tricky, so allow yourself enough time for both to be on time.

My 3 Favorite California Destinations

Have you ever dreamed to switch your surfboard into a snowboard over night? Well you can! When you are in Southern California, the great advantage of the diverse landscape is that you can be at the beach in San Diego, Los Angeles or Orange County one day, and in the desert or mountains the next day.

Big Bear Mountain – California Destinations

Big Bear is only a 3 hours drive from San Diego, and a great change of décor in just a few hours. The drive up the mountain is preparing you for a different background. The palm trees are far behind, the colors changing and the houses are quite different. Big bear offers some exciting activities and attractions. Bear Mountain and Snow Summit Mountain are the two ski resorts in Big Bear California. All year long the two ski resorts here in Big Bear are great places to spend a couple days. During the summer, it is always nice to leave the warm beaches for a while and go enjoy the fresh air of the mountains. Ski lifts are open to bring you up the mountain and take you to nice hiking trails. In the winter you can enjoy the beautiful winter atmosphere in the white snow. The Snow Summit resort caters more to skiers, and Big Bear Mountain is a resort for snowboarders. You can enjoy the snow park and a few nice slopes. They both are small resorts, but still very impressive so close to the coast!

Palm Springs – California Destinations

When you are planing your weekend in Palm Springs you have 2 choices: make it a relaxing weekend getaway, sitting by the pool and taking things slow, or see and do as much to get your mind off of your job and discover what the desert has to offer. Golf is a favorite activity, yes, even in the desert. Let me inform you about some things you can’t do close to home! If you opted for a more active weekend, consider a nature adventure at the Palm Canyon of the Agua Caliente Indian Canyons. The scenery is worth the hike. Come enjoy the color contrast of the rocks, walk along the water, and learn about Indian art.

Now, if you prefer the relaxing side of a weekend escape in Palm Springs, you are at the right place. Palm Springs is one the best Spa destination of California. Most hotels offer spas package deals, and most of the accommodations found in Palm Springs are Spa Resorts. Palm Springs is home of one of the top 10 spas in the country: Parker Palm Springs Spa. This really is the deluxe version of all spas. If you are looking for something not as fancy, you have quite a list of Spas in Palm Springs to choose from.

San Clemente – California Destinations

Located at the very southern point of Orange County, CA, San Clemente is the best beach town escape away from the hustle and bustle of the cities. San Clemente flew under the radar until 1969 with President Richard Nixon purchased a home, nicknamed La Casa Pacifica. San Clemente boasts a mild climate, beautiful beaches, and that small town feel that’s hard to come by in neighboring cities. It’s the perfect relaxing location to dine, drink, explore and surf! They have great organic restaurants, quaint cafes, classic dive bars and even a winery.

What are your favorite California destinations? Agree or disagree with any? Let us know in the comments below!

5 steps to the perfect San Francisco vacation

San Francisco, the jewel of California. The flair of this city is amazing and captures you from the minute you set your foot on the hilly streets of San Francisco. Here are 5 steps to the perfect San Francisco vacation.

San Francisco Vacation: Personality Hotels

Each Personality Hotel has it’s own distinct image and concept, with modern amenities perfect for leisure travel. The Personality Hotels also pride themselves on providing unique, one-of-a-kind packages – remember Snuggie Love? I’ve actually stayed at the Hotel Diva and it proved the perfect central location for a San Francisco vacation. It’s located in Union Square and provides a short walk to everything the city has to offer. They currently have four locations all perfectly located in Downtown: Hotel Union Square, Hotel Diva, Kensington Park Hotel, and The Steinhart.

San Francisco Vacation: Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf

San Francisco vacation

Though the smell can be a bit strong, kids always like to come look at the Sea Lions taking over the pier. When visiting Pier 39 you might want to look at the boutiques and souvenirs shops but the kids can get quickly annoyed with it, so the Sea Lions are always a nice break for them. After the boutiques and sea lions, Pier 39 also often has street performers who always amaze kids. Stop a few minutes and let them enjoy the show! Hey it’s a bowl of fresh air and it’s free!

San Francisco Vacation: Explore the Outdoors

When you are visiting San Francisco, you should definitely check out its neighborhoods. It is completely free and still a very entertaining experience and you get a bit off the beaten path and away from all the expensive touristy spots of San Francisco. There is a lot to discover in each one of them. Of course, when traveling to San Francisco you have to stop by Chinatown; it’s free and one of the major attractions in the city, so it’s a must! Walking around the city will allow you to see a lot and discover more than by just sticking to the typical touristy spots. Another favorite tourist activity for free is to walk over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausolito and enjoy a fantastic view of the city. But remember to wear comfortable walking shoes, as the bridge is about 1.7 miles long and you still have to walk back!

San Francisco Vacation: Alcatraz

If you are visiting San Francisco, one of the places you have to go to is Alcatraz. There are several tour companies that offer cruises to The Rock and you should not miss out on this adventure. With a little planning, Alcatraz will become one of the most memorable San Francisco tours you have done in the City by the Bay. Even though the Alcatraz prison is closed for almost 50 years now, you can feel the cold and stiff atmosphere of a prison that hosted the toughest and dangerous inmates. Later on, let us know how you liked it! We are excited to hear your stories.

San Francisco Vacation: Plan a Day Trip

If you are planning to take a day trip, check out the Napa Valley or the Sonoma Valley. These are places that have enough for you to do for an entire day and more. Visit spas together or just sit on the portico and watch the scenery. Don’t forget to taste some of the best wines in the country as well.

Top 5 Destinations for California Wineries

California has some of the most unique geography in the country. It’s mild climate and fertile soil make California Wineries some of the best in the entire world. While everyone has heard of Napa Valley, there are several other California Wineries you should be aware of. Here are the top 5 destinations for California Wineries.

California Wineries in Sonoma

California Wineries in Sonoma

With 13 different viticultural areas, you bet you have a good choice in where to stop for a little wine tasting! But which are the most popular vineyards and wineries that you should not miss? You can start by deciding which wines you are interested in: Chardonay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet, Sauvignon or Merlot… and then select the wineries that produce these wines. Or you can just visit the most popular wineries of the Sonoma County. Benziger Family Winery is one of the most popular one for its garden and its great wines. It offers you a full experience. If you want to get a more European style visit, then you should go to the Chateau St Jean in Kenwood. Everything depends on the experience you are looking for.

California Wineries in Napa Valley

With picturesque views that have vineyards planted on slanting hills, a Napa Valley weekend getaway is actually a place you can visit at any time of the year. Even though you may have driven to this town, make sure that you rent a bicycle to take advantage of the numerous bike tracks and the scenic beauty that lines them. You can do a 10 mile trip to Yountville or a 30 mile one to Calistoga if you feel fit.
Obviously you have to stop by the vineyards for some interesting and rejuvenating wine tasting. The Artesa Winery offers a great view as you sip the refreshing wines too. You could also choose to take a sip out of the goblets at the Domaine Carneros or the Clos Du Val Winery.
While you are at the Napa Valley, you cannot afford to miss the Napa Valley Wine Train or the hot air balloon ride that the place offers. The best places to eat out here include Celadon and Zuzu.

California Wineries in Paso Robles

Small-town comfort and family-owned wineries make Paso Robles a relaxing, quaint year-round destination. Paso Robles is situated in California’s Central Coast, roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. And as you look at this AVA Map http://www.pasowine.com/ava-map/ it’s clear you have a ton of good choices. What makes Paso Robles such a great wine destination is the down-to-earth people, and lack of wine-snobbery that may be at some winery destinations. Even casual wine drinkers will have a great time relaxing at the vineyards and enjoying a wine tour.
Paso Robles wineries grow mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah. However they’re also known for their great Zinfandels.
So where do start? One of my personal favorites, the Tobin James Cellars, is a great place to begin, and has one of the best tasting rooms.

California Wineries in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara Wine Country is divided in 4 different areas. In the Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the main productions. This area is also popular for golfing escapes. Cambria Winery is very popular for its wines selection and especially for the view. If you are looking for a more off the beaten path winery in Santa Barbara, you should visit the Kenneth Volk Vineyard in Foxen Cayon for a unique experience. Santa Inez Valley is home to most of the wineries of Santa Barbara Wine Country. If you like Cabernet and Merlot, you will enjoy this wine-growing area. The Santa Maria and Santa Inez Valley are the most important vineyard areas. Sta Rita Hills, which is on the Santa Inez Valley appellation, and Los Alamos Valley also grow Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. For a great picnic spot and a Pinot Noir degustation, Melville Vineyard in Sta Rita Hills offers you a great mediterranean touch. In Los Alamos, come enjoy your wine between the cattle ranches and farms at the Bedford Thompson Winery. As one of the largest in the region, this winery offers a interesting wine experience in a rustic setting.

California wineries in Temecula Wine Country

California Wineries in Temecula Wine Country

One of Temecula’s oldest wineries is the Mount Palomar Winery. It has been around since 1969 and offers the classic Bordeaux and Bordeaux blends. This winery also makes the most delicious port and a Solera Cream Sherry too. So make sure that you get a taste of these as well when you are on your tasting spree.

The South Coast Winery Resort and Spa offers you a chance to taste some tingling wines with a yoga twist. Even though this winery is a new kid on the block (the first bottling was in 2003) it has already won more than 400 awards. Given the popularity of yoga and wine tasting both, this is a place you might want to make prior reservations for.

The Thornton Winery gives you an opportunity to wine and dine at the same time. They are famous for their Brut Reserve and Cabernet-Merlot blend. Try getting here on a weekend and you will get a chance to attend the Champagne Jazz Concert Series.

San Francisco Trip for the Whole Family

The City by the Bay is one of the most unique cities in the entire country. It’s a beautiful city that’s deep in culture and charm. Besides being a perfect romantic getaway, there’s enough in San Francisco to satisfy your whole family! Here are some ideas for the perfect San Francisco trip.

Explore by Foot – San Francisco Trip

San Francisco is considered the most European city on the West Coast. Most of the sights are in walking distance and you will experience the character of San Francisco much better when you explore it by foot. San Francisco is also known as the Rome of the US, as it is also built on seven hills. So be prepared for some more or less strenuous walks and leave your high heals at home – at least during the day!

Pier 39 – San Francisco Trip

Though the smell can be a bit strong, kids always like to come look at the Sea Lions taking over the pier. When visiting Pier 39 you might want to look at the boutiques and souvenirs shops but the kids can get quickly annoyed with it, so the Sea Lions are always a nice break for them. After the boutiques and sea lions, Pier 39 also often has street performers who always amaze kids. Stop a few minutes and let them enjoy the show! Hey it’s a bowl of fresh air and it’s free!

Aquarium of the Bay – San Francisco Trip

They will love it, and you might enjoy it as well. What is the best way to discover the aquatic life of San Francisco? By walking through a 300 feet glass tunnel! They have a petting pool, feeding sessions and a very interesting lab to teach you and your kids how to preserve the environment and learn how the aquatic life can be affected by the climate changes.

Alcatraz Island – San Francisco Trip

Though more for older children, Alcatraz Island seems to be an interesting stop for a lot of kids. They get a historic lecture a bit more different than the typical history class they are used to and get to ride the ferry, which can make the whole adventure a lot more fun to them.

Reserve your hotel soon and come enjoy this such amazing city with your family!

Best Family Hotels – San Francisco Trip

San Francisco is a large city with many diverse attractions. It is often easier said than done to find a centrally located hotel when you are traveling with children, so you avoid long driving times and can get back to your hotel for the afternoon nap or to pick  up the beloved teddy bear you forgot to pack. But you also want a hotel where your children can have a good time and where you will not have to worry about bothering the rest of the customers. The best hotel in San Francsico for your family vacation is the Westin St Francis at Union Square. If you have younger children, cribs are available.
