Labor Day Events at Phoenix

Salt River Tubing on the Lower Salt River is a customary part of Labor Day celebrations in Phoenix. Activities like beach ball, music, local radio, contests and games are involved with drives to keep the river area clean and litter free. There is the Litchfield Park Lights Up that has been rescheduled for Labor Day this year as the monsoon storm spoilt the fun on Fourth of July. Firework display, great food and dancing can be expected at this venue.
The annual Phoenix Fear Film Festival is slated to be held on Labor Day Saturday and this year there shall be a screening of horror movies through the day. Free Fly Days at Flying Heritage Collection

On September 11 and September 25 on Paine Field in Everett, WA, just north of Seattle, you can be part of the annual flights of old aircrafts that need to get maintained and moved regularly. On September 11 be part of American Fighter Day with the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang, or the Luftwaffe Day on September 25^th with Fieseler Storch and the Bf 109. These events are free!

How to Reach Alki Beach

Alki Beach is located southwest of downtown Seattle facing the Elliot Bay. You can reach it either via car over the West Seattle Bridge, there is free on-street parking available. You may however experience some delays in finding a spot when weather is nice. Another option is the water taxi, which leaves between Pier 55 and Pier 56. Each way it costs you 2 dollars and you can catch the free DART shuttle which takes you to Alki Beach.

Things to do on Alki Beach

Alki Beach will get you through your day. Whether you are active and love sports, or just want to chill ad relax, whether you come on your own or with family & dogs, there are plenty of things to do on Alki Beach. You can go jogging, hiking, biking, or roller skating. What do you think about taking a walk on the beach, enjoying the water and a picturesque view of Seattle’s skyline? If you like to be here with your friends, you can have bonfires in the fire pits available on the beach, have a BBQ or play beach volleyball – you must bring your own net though. You can also lay down on the grass or the sandy beach and get your summer tan. If you want to get into the water (be careful, it only has about 56°F in the summer!), try some paddle surfing. No matter what you do, at some point you will get hungry and its time to hit one of the countless bars and restaurants close by to get some fish & chips. Take them To Go and eat it while watching a beautiful Seattle sunset. You will be amazed how fast a day on Alki Beach can go by! The next time you visit Alki Beach, stop by at the Alki Point Lighthouse or the Log House Museum. The lighthouse has no admission, the Log House Museum only asks for a voluntary donation. Both places will tell you a lot about the history of Alki beach ad the Denny party, the first white settlers who arrived in Seattle in 1851. The museum will also tell you about the Duwamish people, the Native Americans who used to live here before Alki Beach got discovered. For this event, you should also check the obelisk as well as a Statue of Liberty replica which reminds all visitors that Alki used to get called New York-Alki.

Statistics show that more and more grandparents take their grand children on a vacation. While in former days, the kids visited their grandparent’s houses, today all of them discover new places and have their travel adventures together! Which kid (and his or her parents) can say no to this opportunity? Travel Industry Association of America found out that 30% of all U.S. American leisure travelers who are grandparents, took their grand children on one trip or more! Did you know that there is even an official name for grand parents traveling with their grand children? It’s called grand travel! Even more and more kids and teenagers feel confident traveling with their grand parents – but what should all of them know and consider? Fox Rent A Car prepared a list of useful tips for traveling with grand children:

Travel with Grand Children: Medical Security and Official Documents

Make sure you have copies of the medical cards for all of your grand children, as well as permission from the parents that you can make medical care decisions! Note – you will need a notarized letter in case of an emergency. Also take all prescription cards, make sure your grand children have  dental insurance and their insurance is valid in the location you will go to! Always have a list of emergency contacts with you. Also, you need to make sure your grand children have a valid ID card with them. Eventually, even take their passports too. This is a worst case scenario, that nobody wants to happen, but if it does, it helps if you are prepared.

Travel with Grand Children: Planning Phase

Who decides where to go to, what to do, where to stay, when to travel? It may take a little longer to prepare everything, but discuss options with your grand children. Where would they like to go to? What can you do with them, and what is just too much for all of you? Combine your experiences and their creativity; the results will amaze all of you. You can also plan by using senior and kids’ discounts – in the end you will pay less with those discounts than using a family ticket!

Travel with Grand Children: On the road/ airplane

Remember how it was when you traveled with your own children? They needed to be entertained, especially in those “boring times” of sitting in the car, on the airport or in the train. Make sure you have some games handy, some music or books. Try to do something exciting with your grand children – they can watch their DVDs at home, too. Interbay Golf Center offers 80 covered stalls and even 40 heated stalls, so you can even go there when it rains, at night time or when its too chilly too be on the golf course. A bucket of balls is quite affordable and if you go there before 9am, they will even double the number of balls in the bucket. A real penny saver and a great place to spend your time at!

This is the place to go to if you are a beginner or just don’t like annual memberships. Greenlake golf course offers affordable golfing fun, it is great for family trips or a good place to hag out with your friends. If you can, go in the morning hours to avoid long waiting times. The holes at Greenlake Golf Course range from 65 to 105 yards, so quite some room to practice.

Again, this golf club is owned by the City of Seattle so it is open to the public and quite affordable. Just as Greenlake Golf Course, the Jackson Park Golf Club is a good place for those who want to practice and discover their hidden golfing talents. You will for sure need some time to finish all holes, so plan ahead and avoid the park’s “rush hours”.

This golf course got completely remodeled a few years ago and offers great, yet affordable golfing. The ranges of the holes are quite short, which may be motivating to some newbies or impatient players. This also means that you can keep your kids entertained and motivated, while you enjoy the scenic views.

This course is good for those of you who are already experienced golfers. Its courses have some elevation changes and winding fairways so in order to keep up with other players, you should already know what you do. Beginners may feel rushed over the course. It is, just as several other courses we have listed, a municipal golf course which allows you to play at a reasonable price and you will never forget those awesome views of Seattle!
