Driving in Las Vegas by Fox Car Rental

Ever since Las Vegas was built it was tradition to travel to the city by car. A fast connection through freeways and an extensive road system make it easy to find your way to and around Sin City. If you want to consider driving to Las Vegas, Fox Rent A Car has a few tips for you that you should follow to get there timely and safely. Have a great drive to Las Vegas!

Driving in Las Vegas: How to get to Las Vegas

The main freeway to Las Vegas is the I-15, which leads to Los Angeles in the Southwest and to Salt Lake City in the Northeast. The driving times from Los Angeles are about 5 hours and from Salt Lake City 7 hours, depending on traffic. A piece of advice: never drive to Las Vegas on a Friday after work; you will for sure get into very heavy traffic. Try to reach on Thursday night, the drive will be much easier and faster. If you prefer not to take the 15 freeway from Los Angeles, try the I-40 and hit the 93 or 95. The speed limit on freeways are 65 mph on two-lane freeways, and multiple-lane freeways may have a speed limit if 75 mph. If you are not sure, stay down at 65 mph until you see a sign, you can’t go wrong with that.

Driving in Las Vegas: Getting around in the city

Las Vegas rush hours usually are from 8am to 10am and 4.30pm to 7pm. It affects the main streets into the suburbs, as well as the freeways. If you get into traffic, stay calm. Las Vegas drivers love to honk, don’t get upset about it. On Friday nights and every time there is a big event in one of the hotels on the Strip, you also have to expect traffic. If you don’t want to go to those events, consider taking the streets behind the Strip, this will get you to your destination much faster and easier. If you are visiting Las Vegas as a tourist, be careful and patient and plan your route before you leave.

Driving in Las Vegas: Parking on the Strip

Driving on the strip can be messy already, but so is parking too. Most hotels offer both, free parking and valet parking. Once you got out of your car, consider walking up and down the Strip. This way you can have more fun and spend less time on the road and parking garage.

Driving in Las Vegas: General Rules and Laws

Nevada law allows you to drive at the age of 15 ¾, you need to have a co-driver who is older than 21 and has a valid driver’s license. Having insurance and being able to prove it is mandatory. You must wear your seat belts at all time and legal alcohol limits are restricted and strongly enforced. Drivers over the age of 21 can have an alcohol to blood ratio of 0.08%, younger drivers may only have 0.02% at maximum. Never drink and drive! You can find all Nevada traffic rules and regulations at the driver’s license manual of the Nevada DMV.

Fox Rent A Car wants to know – what is the worst traffic event you have had on your way or in Las Vegas? Tell us your stories to get others better prepared.

Hiking in the Heat – How to Stay Cool on Your Summer Hike

Even though the summer months are not the ideal time for hikes, many families can only go hiking between July and September, the time when their kids have their summer break from school. But how can you be prepared for a long hike during 90 degrees F? How can your body and mind stay active enough to not only keep you safe and sound, but also lets you enjoy your summer hike? There are a few things you must consider when you go hiking in the summer, and we at Fox Rent A Car will get you on track!

Summer hike: Start early!

If you go hiking in the summer you do not want to start late. Only the early bird catches the worm! Start your hike when the sun goes up so that you walk while it is still cool. No summer hiker wants to leave the house in the heat of midday, since this is not only uncomfortable, but even a health hazard.

Summer hike: Drink and eat!

Give your body a lot of water. A hiker does lose a about 1/2 to 1 quart of water each hour of hiking, so carry to least that much water with you plus twice as much for the return hike. If you plan a longer hike and don’t like carrying water bottles, try the camelbacks. Those ones hold plenty of water and you carry them on your back. Also, you should pack some small snacks that you can eat during your hike. A salty snack is best since it will help your body to retain water.

Summer hike: Cool your body down!

When you go hiking on a hot day it is very important that you cool your body down as much as you can. You can either buy a misting system, or you put a moist towel on the back of your neck which will help to keep your body temperature stable. Don’t panic if you start to sweat while hiking, this is very important for your body and a normal reaction. Try not to wear a hat, as it will keep the heat in your body. Rather use a sunscreen as protection for your eyes. The best cooling system however is to jump into a small river keeping your clothes on. This will cool your body down for a long time.

Summer hike: Dress accordingly

How should I dress when I go hiking in the summer? Many people ask themselves this question and there is a simple answer. Wear long pants to protect and cover your legs. Many hiking pants that you can buy won’t make you sweat and let the wind go through. Wear a short-sleeved shirt, or a thin long-sleeve shirt that breathes and lets air cool your body down naturally.

Summer hike: Always hike in groups!

You should never hike alone, especially when it is very warm. Always have at least one other person with you so that you can watch each other and check that both of you drink enough water. You should have a cell phone handy and a map where you can clearly see where you are at. This was you can get found in case of an emergency, or plan how to get back home safely.

Take your time and enjoy your hike!

Don’t forget that you are hiking, and not in a competition. Hiking in warm weather already is very demanding for your body so make sure you know your personal limits and stay comfortable. The Fox Rent A Car team wishes you a great and relaxing summer hike!

Free Museums and Tours in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is a one of a kind travel destination, and the most favorite place to go to for American travelers! Most visitors solely come to Las Vegas for gambling, but there are many other things you can do on your Las Vegas vacation. Today, we at Fox Rent A Car have prepared the Top 5 Free Museums and Tours in Las Vegas. Spend your day at various exhibitions, and enjoy the night at Las Vegas casinos! We wish you a great time at the Las Vegas free museums or on a free Las Vegas tour.

Howard W Cannon Aviation Museum

This museum is one of the most unusual ones. You must be an airline passenger passing McCarran International Airport to be able to see the exhibitions. Most of the museum’s pieces are located on a walkway above the baggage claim area, and a few others are spread throughout the airport. The topic of this airport is quite logical: it describes the history and development of the southern Nevada public and commercial aviation. Entry is free, you just need to be a passenger.

Marjorie Barrick Museum

This museum is part of the UNLV campus. In addition to the museum you can also find the Donald H. Baepler Xeric Garden. Both places offer free admission, and only suggest contributions. The purpose of both institutions is to exhibit the latest discoveries of humankind’s heritage. Various topics, amazing exhibition pieces and free entry make this museum and the garden being a must-do on your next Las Vegas trip.

Cirque du Soleil Pieces of Art by Richard MacDonald

You can find this rather small exhibition at the Bellagio Hotel, at the “O” Theatre Lobby. Discover 50 pieces of art and human beauty, drawings and sculptures of a life that is based on performance and elegance. MacDonald amazingly combines sensitivity and heroism, strength and fragility. Take your time and discover the fine details of MacDonalds pieces of art, you will be amazed about this internationally recognized artist.

Hoover Dam

Hoover Dam is one of the best known constructions on earth. Many myths, impressive moments and results, as well as the thought about future developments permanently fascinate people. Walking tours on the dam are for free, this is the biggest museum that you can get at this price! If you want to take a guided tour or visit the exhibitions, you must pay admission, yet even those dollars are very well invested.

Don Pablo Cigar Company Tour

Since Cuban cigars are not allowed to get imported into the United States, why should one not produce them themselves? See how Cuban cigar specialists craft cigars directly at the factory! Factory tours are free and offered on almost every day, and maybe you can also find the perfect Christmas gift for your loved ones?

Fox Rent A Car wishes you a great time at Las Vegas’ free museums and tours. If you have discovered free museums that you want everybody to know and see, please get in touch with us and let us know! We wait to hearing from you.

Fox Rent A Car Tips for Traveling with Grand Children

Statistics show that more and more grandparents take their grand children on a vacation. While in former days, the kids visited their grandparent’s houses, today all of them discover new places and have their travel adventures together! Which kid (and his or her parents) can say no to this opportunity? Travel Industry Association of America found out that 30% of all U.S. American leisure travelers who are grandparents, took their grand children on one trip or more! Did you know that there is even an official name for grand parents traveling with their grand children? It’s called grand travel! Even more and more kids and teenagers feel confident traveling with their grand parents – but what should all of them know and consider? Fox Rent A Car prepared a list of useful tips for traveling with grand children:

Travel with Grand Children: Medical Security and Official Documents

Make sure you have copies of the medical cards for all of your grand children, as well as permission from the parents that you can make medical care decisions! Note – you will need a notarized letter in case of an emergency. Also take all prescription cards, make sure your grand children have  dental insurance and their insurance is valid in the location you will go to! Always have a list of emergency contacts with you. Also, you need to make sure your grand children have a valid ID card with them. Eventually, even take their passports too. This is a worst case scenario, that nobody wants to happen, but if it does, it helps if you are prepared.

Travel with Grand Children: Planning Phase

Who decides where to go to, what to do, where to stay, when to travel? It may take a little longer to prepare everything, but discuss options with your grand children. Where would they like to go to? What can you do with them, and what is just too much for all of you? Combine your experiences and their creativity; the results will amaze all of you. You can also plan by using senior and kids’ discounts – in the end you will pay less with those discounts than using a family ticket!

Travel with Grand Children: On the road/ airplane

Remember how it was when you traveled with your own children? They needed to be entertained, especially in those “boring times” of sitting in the car, on the airport or in the train. Make sure you have some games handy, some music or books. Try to do something exciting with your grand children – they can watch their DVDs at home, too. Play and learn, isn’t that what grandparents offer to their grand children? Also check out our collection of posts about traveling with kids.

Travel with Grand Children: Your trip

Again – playing and learning is what your trip should be about. Show your grand children that there is a life without TV, computer and Xbox. In the end, it is just like in the old days: the more energy the children use during the day, the better they will sleep at night and the more comfortable they will become to spend time with their grand parents. Respect each other though – the world has simply changed so much during the past decades, you may just need to accept new hobbies, as weird as they may be for you! Consult the parents if you are not sure. Also, don’t forget that the kids won’t get tired as easily as you will!

Travel with Grand Children: After the trip

When everybody gets back home, its always a feeling of relief, but even a little sadness since the adventure “grand travel” is over. But take a few hours, and prepare a little presentation of your trip with your grand children! Using their computers to show the pictures, tell everybody what a wonderful trip it was! Be a good example of a person, parent and grand parent, and enjoy the time with the little ones as much as you can!

Have you traveled with your grand children before? Where did you go to, and what advises do you have for other grand parents? What is a must-do, what is a must-not-do? Share your stories and experiences, and help grand traveling even more!

Fox Rent A Car takes you to Las Vegas’ Historic Sites

See the city from a perspective you would only imagine at some place else!

Las Vegas and old buildings? History? Good joke! Las Vegas is the city that reached its glamour by building bigger, more luxurious, more expensive, higher and crazier, by realizing unbelievable and world famous projects, just to pass it by another bigger and even crazier project! However, there are actually some buildings that have survived the urge for permanent innovation and Fox Rent A Car presents five of the most historic places in Las Vegas, NV.

Historic sites in Las Vegas: Old Las Vegas Mormon State Historic Park

It was in 1855 when Mormons settled in the area that would later become America’s most famous tourist attraction. What is the Mormon State Historic Park today, used to be a place where mail service between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles would take rest at. Later on, due to springs and growing vegetation the city grew and now, it presents the oldest structure in Southern Nevada that is not built from Native Americans.

Historic sites in Las Vegas: Atomic Testing Museum

Each year only a few thousand people come and take a tour of the Nevada Test Site Center, can you imagine? This Test Site has a tremendous importance for the country and the whole world, since in 1955 a nuclear bomb was tested there. Only a few houses close by the Site remained and can now be seen on those tours, held by former employees. There have been many other weapons been tested as well, but none of them had such an impact as the nuclear bomb. A must see for everybody who is interested in history!

Historic sites in Las Vegas: The Railroad Cottages

Between 1909 and 1911 the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad build a total of 64 cottages for the mid-level workers to live in. Only a handful of those cottages still exist, one of them you can find at the Clark County Heritage Museum, others have been removed to Las Vegas Springs Preserve. If you are interested to see how railroad workers used to live, this is a place you should check out.

Historic sites in Las Vegas: The Golden Gate Casino

Back in 1906 this hotel opened its doors named Hotel Nevada, and it is still open today, just with a different name! If you decide to stay or play there, expect tastefully decorated rooms, a full-service casino, and some great food. Try the shrimp cocktail! The house belongs to the Fremont Street Experience that you must have seen. Get ready for street artists, shows, and even free concerts!

Historic sites in Las Vegas: El Portal Theatre

Can you imagine Las Vegas without an A/C? Be happy that you will never have to experience this! Before the El Portal Theatre opened its doors in 1928, no building had an air-conditioning installed. In addition, this was Las Vegas’ one and only movie theatre! Today, the building hosts an Indian Arts & Crafts store and still shows some of the building’s featured that every old-fashioned civil engineer will just fall in love with.

What will you do while visiting Las Vegas?

No matter what you came to Las Vegas for, try to take some time and visit some of those historical sites! Most of them are opened during the day only and why should you not spend a few minutes at the city’s oldest casinos? If you know about other secret, and historical spots in the city, let our readers know.

Why not enjoy the crowd for a while, and then get away from it all and remember how lovely Mother Earth is! Hop into your car and visit the Snoqualmie Falls. The 270 foot waterfall attracts more than 1.5 million visitors each year. Get some fresh air, take advantage of hiking trails and eventually get the obligatory souvenir. Earth Day Events on the West Coast

Earth Day is a very important event, celebrated around the world for the past 40 years. As we need to become more and more aware of the peril our planet is facing, Earth Day is a great opportunity to teach visitors about the challenges Earth faces due to climate changes. It also teaches us about the ways, habits and solutions we can find and apply to our daily life to help preserve our planet. Earth Day is the same day as the spring equinox, the 22d of April. However it is often celebrated the weekend before, this year it is on Sunday April 18th. So if you want to learn and be part of this green global community, here is some information about diverse Earth Day celebrations on the West Coast and other major cities.

Earth Day events in San Diego

San Diego Earth Day is one of the largest Earth Day events in the world. The festivities take over Balboa Park. As it is an important environmental awareness event, it brings together a very large diversified crowd, and is a great family attraction. Many boothes are built to teach and make you aware about how to conserve energy, and other environment friendly topics; there is a large food court with lots of different cuisines, from meat to vegan and organic food. It presents various activities and introduces green concepts to reach out to a vast age ranch. So come to Balboa Park from 10 am to 5 pm on April 18th to celebrate Earth Day to learn how you can help save our planet or support organizations who works for this.

Earth Day events in Bay Area

If you are in Northern California not to worry, you will find a way to celebrate Earth Day as well! Earth Day in San Francisco is not a large festival like in San Diego, but it is still an important event. Instead of a large festival, you can find a lot of various events, sometimes even for the whole week after the actual Earth Day. On the 18th, between 11am and 4pm you can go to Sausalito to celebrate Earth Day with a group of hikers. This is a great family experience to learn about the environment.
The major event in the Bay Are is Oakland Earth Day on the 17th of April between 9am and noon, where you can volunteer to help clean Oakland! Otherwise, you should stop by the Oakland Zoo, where a great Earth Day celebration is organized between 10 am and 3 pm. Boothes, demonstrations and activities are planned to share tips with you on how to be more green and care for our planet.

Earth Day events in Seattle

Seattle also has many events planned in the honor of Earth Day. If you like to give your time and help the community, the Pacific Science Center Earth Day event is an interesting plan. You can help take care of the park. For sportive people you can participate to the Earth Day 5K and Alumni Run on the 18th. This event is a fundraising event to help protect the environment and support the community. For more Earth Day events in Seattle read here.
If you are looking to share your knowledge and be part of Earth Day to actively help the planet, a special event is planned at St. Edwards State Park. You can be there as a visitor or as an exhibitor. So don’t wait check it out and help make this day special and successful.

Earth Day events in Phoenix

On April 22d, Phoenix celebrates Earth Day at the Cesar Chavez Plaza. This business event allows people to interact and exchange ideas and projects to save the environment such as recycling techniques, water waste management and such.

Earth Day events in Las Vegas

Though Earth Day is an important celebration, not every city organizes a festival with booths and such, Las Vegas keeps it up to the business around town to celebrate Earth day in their own way. From Macy’s to the Las Vegas History Museum, various projects happen during Earth Day week to help raise awareness for green habits.

Fox Rent A Car Earth Day Event

And because at Fox Rent A Car we also believe in change toward a better and greener way of life, we decided to organize our own Earth Day celebration! We give you a whooping 15 % off on all Hybrid Rentals with Fox Rent A Car for this special day! So make sure to support the cause and rent an Hybrid on Earth Day!

“Best in the world – I was amazed to be offered to choose from a line of top cars – excellent!!!”

How does the Choice Program work?

Ok, so now we will explain to you how the Choice Program at Fox Rent A Car actually works. Once you arrive at one of our Choice Program locations, you go to the desk, sign your papers, head into the lot and choose the most suitable rental car in your category. In case you find your suitcases are to large to fit in the trunk, or your head hits the ceiling, just take a car in a different category and upgrade when you leave the lot. It’s as easy as that.

Did you try our Fox Rent A Car Choice Program yet? Let us know how you like it! We appreciate your feedback!
