Hiking in the Heat – How to Stay Cool on Your Summer Hike

Even though the summer months are not the ideal time for hikes, many families can only go hiking between July and September, the time when their kids have their summer break from school. But how can you be prepared for a long hike during 90 degrees F? How can your body and mind stay active enough to not only keep you safe and sound, but also lets you enjoy your summer hike? There are a few things you must consider when you go hiking in the summer, and we at Fox Rent A Car will get you on track!

Summer hike: Start early!

If you go hiking in the summer you do not want to start late. Only the early bird catches the worm! Start your hike when the sun goes up so that you walk while it is still cool. No summer hiker wants to leave the house in the heat of midday, since this is not only uncomfortable, but even a health hazard.

Summer hike: Drink and eat!

Give your body a lot of water. A hiker does lose a about 1/2 to 1 quart of water each hour of hiking, so carry to least that much water with you plus twice as much for the return hike. If you plan a longer hike and don’t like carrying water bottles, try the camelbacks. Those ones hold plenty of water and you carry them on your back. Also, you should pack some small snacks that you can eat during your hike. A salty snack is best since it will help your body to retain water.

Summer hike: Cool your body down!

When you go hiking on a hot day it is very important that you cool your body down as much as you can. You can either buy a misting system, or you put a moist towel on the back of your neck which will help to keep your body temperature stable. Don’t panic if you start to sweat while hiking, this is very important for your body and a normal reaction. Try not to wear a hat, as it will keep the heat in your body. Rather use a sunscreen as protection for your eyes. The best cooling system however is to jump into a small river keeping your clothes on. This will cool your body down for a long time.

Summer hike: Dress accordingly

How should I dress when I go hiking in the summer? Many people ask themselves this question and there is a simple answer. Wear long pants to protect and cover your legs. Many hiking pants that you can buy won’t make you sweat and let the wind go through. Wear a short-sleeved shirt, or a thin long-sleeve shirt that breathes and lets air cool your body down naturally.

Summer hike: Always hike in groups!

You should never hike alone, especially when it is very warm. Always have at least one other person with you so that you can watch each other and check that both of you drink enough water. You should have a cell phone handy and a map where you can clearly see where you are at. This was you can get found in case of an emergency, or plan how to get back home safely.

Take your time and enjoy your hike!

Don’t forget that you are hiking, and not in a competition. Hiking in warm weather already is very demanding for your body so make sure you know your personal limits and stay comfortable. The Fox Rent A Car team wishes you a great and relaxing summer hike!

Free Museums for Kids in Phoenix

Traveling with kids and entertaining them easily gets very expensive. Especially when your wallet is a little tighter, it does help to visit museums or children’s places on their free admission days. But when are they, and for which places? For Rent A Car has prepared an overview of free kid-friendly museums in Phoenix.

Free museum fun for Kids: Arizona Capital Museum

The Arizona Capital Museum is a great place if you want to teach your kids about Arizona’s history. There are 20 exhibits at this museum which show the past and present of living in Arizona. The best part: this museum is always free!

Free museum fun for Kids: Scottsdale Historical Museum

If the Arizona Capital Museum does not provide enough information about history to you, then go and check the Scottsdale Historical Museum. This place will give you a very good impression about culture and history of Scottsdale, AZ. Price: there is no such thing as a price. Admission is always free.

Free museum fun for Kids: Phoenix Art Museum

The Phoenix Art Museum offers a great variety of local, national and international pieces of arts. More than 18,000 pieces of art will fascinate you and your kids. The pricing strategy is even better: children under the age of 6 are always free. For the adults the Phoenix Art Museum opens for free on Tuesday evenings from 3-9pm, and on each first Friday of the month between 6 and 10pm.

Free museum fun for Kids: Pueblo Grande Museum

The Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park is the place where history meets modern life. Not far away from Sky Harbor International Airport is a 1,500 year-old Hohokam village ruin. Whether you are curious about the daily lives, architecture, plants and animals or just the nature – you can get it here. Kids under 6 are always free, adults can enter for free on each Sunday.

Free museum fun for Kids: Heard Museum

Heard Museum means lots of time to teach your children about visual arts and its development. We all know that most kids get bored with this topic rather easily, so three of the ten galleries offer activities where children can build things with their own hands, and even take their works home! Interactive games round up the museum adventure, so have fun! Children under 6 are free, and Arizona residents can enter the museum with free admission every second Sunday.

So whichever place you want to take your kids for free, have fun at the special admission days at those wonderful and impressive Phoenix museums! Do you know of other places that regularly offer free admission? Let us and our readers know!

We hope you have enjoyed our golf posts and that you like our golf course recommendations! Whichever course you want to add, let us know!

Cheap Golf in Salt Lake City and Phoenix: Bonneville Golf Club, Salt Lake City

Play up and down the mountains and enjoy great views while playing some nice golf. Bonneville Golf Club has beautiful greens and is an 18-hole mountain designed golf course. This may not be the perfect place for beginners, but definitely worth a try if you have a little practice.

Cheap Golf in Salt Lake City: Wingpointe Golf Course

Wingpointe has its name for a god reason: it is located close to SLC airport, so you will have the plane noises during your game. However, a quite challenging course and well maintained nature will get you to your game and won’t let you even think about the noise level. This course is tough, so take your time and practice!

Cheap Golf in Salt Lake City: West Ridge Golf Club

West Ridge Gold Club offers some golf excitement for a reasonable price. The greens are well-maintained, and 18 holes mean quite some work for you and your buddies. The course is not too hard so beginners will feel good playing there.

Cheap Golf in Salt Lake City: Stonebridge Golf Club At Lake Park, West Valley City

The Stonebridge Golf Club is one of the courses that are not municipal, yet affordable and nice to play at. Awesome greens, 27 holes at every difficulty level you need, and all for a daily fee. Include a cart though in your price calculation, as the holes are very far from each other.

Cheap Golf in Phoenix: We-Ko-PA Golf Club

Despite the quite weird name We-Ko-PA Golf Club may be the one and only you will ever go to when you are in or around Phoenix! It is very well maintained, offers nice and challenging games and a couple of hours of great entertainment.

Cheap Golf in Phoenix: Orange Tree Golf Resort

Orange Tree Golf resort has an expensive sounding name, but you can play the course for a reasonable price. The whole area is taken much care of even though playing golf here is affordable. Friendly and helpful staff members, as well as modern and good equipment will almost guarantee a nice day out on the course!

So wherever you are or may go to, there is always a good place for a nice golf game. We wish you safe trips and enjoyable times at our Fox Rent A Car locations and test as many golf courses as you can. Nice games on well-maintained courses do not have to cost an arm and a leg, so have fun!

Fox Rent A Car Tips for Traveling with Grand Children

Statistics show that more and more grandparents take their grand children on a vacation. While in former days, the kids visited their grandparent’s houses, today all of them discover new places and have their travel adventures together! Which kid (and his or her parents) can say no to this opportunity? Travel Industry Association of America found out that 30% of all U.S. American leisure travelers who are grandparents, took their grand children on one trip or more! Did you know that there is even an official name for grand parents traveling with their grand children? It’s called grand travel! Even more and more kids and teenagers feel confident traveling with their grand parents – but what should all of them know and consider? Fox Rent A Car prepared a list of useful tips for traveling with grand children:

Travel with Grand Children: Medical Security and Official Documents

Make sure you have copies of the medical cards for all of your grand children, as well as permission from the parents that you can make medical care decisions! Note – you will need a notarized letter in case of an emergency. Also take all prescription cards, make sure your grand children have  dental insurance and their insurance is valid in the location you will go to! Always have a list of emergency contacts with you. Also, you need to make sure your grand children have a valid ID card with them. Eventually, even take their passports too. This is a worst case scenario, that nobody wants to happen, but if it does, it helps if you are prepared.

Travel with Grand Children: Planning Phase

Who decides where to go to, what to do, where to stay, when to travel? It may take a little longer to prepare everything, but discuss options with your grand children. Where would they like to go to? What can you do with them, and what is just too much for all of you? Combine your experiences and their creativity; the results will amaze all of you. You can also plan by using senior and kids’ discounts – in the end you will pay less with those discounts than using a family ticket!

Travel with Grand Children: On the road/ airplane

Remember how it was when you traveled with your own children? They needed to be entertained, especially in those “boring times” of sitting in the car, on the airport or in the train. Make sure you have some games handy, some music or books. Try to do something exciting with your grand children – they can watch their DVDs at home, too. Play and learn, isn’t that what grandparents offer to their grand children? Also check out our collection of posts about traveling with kids.

Travel with Grand Children: Your trip

Again – playing and learning is what your trip should be about. Show your grand children that there is a life without TV, computer and Xbox. In the end, it is just like in the old days: the more energy the children use during the day, the better they will sleep at night and the more comfortable they will become to spend time with their grand parents. Respect each other though – the world has simply changed so much during the past decades, you may just need to accept new hobbies, as weird as they may be for you! Consult the parents if you are not sure. Also, don’t forget that the kids won’t get tired as easily as you will!

Travel with Grand Children: After the trip

When everybody gets back home, its always a feeling of relief, but even a little sadness since the adventure “grand travel” is over. But take a few hours, and prepare a little presentation of your trip with your grand children! Using their computers to show the pictures, tell everybody what a wonderful trip it was! Be a good example of a person, parent and grand parent, and enjoy the time with the little ones as much as you can!

Have you traveled with your grand children before? Where did you go to, and what advises do you have for other grand parents? What is a must-do, what is a must-not-do? Share your stories and experiences, and help grand traveling even more!
