Lake Camping Grounds in and around Los Angeles

Even though the beaches clearly dominate the summer in Southern California, there still is a considerable amount of people who prefer swimming in a lake over catching the waves of the ocean. But lakes are not only perfect places to go swimming and fishing, mostly there are camping sites close by so that you can enjoy nature day and night! Fox Rent A Car knows where such lake camping grounds are, so have fun!

Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park

This park is just a few miles West of Ontario, CA in San Dimas. It offers almost 2,000 acres of pure entertainment, including a water-theme park, nature walks, swimming, picnicking and horseback riding. To relax at night time we recommend you to camp on the East Shore RV Park. The beach is open for swimming from Thursdays to Sundays only between June 24th and Labor Day, so make sure that you come here on the right days.

Lake Arrowhead

This lake is about 50 miles North East of Ontario, CA in the woodlands close to Big Bear. The elevation is at about 5,500’ and Lake Arrowhead invites you for kayaking, boating, backpacking and hiking among others. Have fun and witness the amazing Southern Californian nature. Be very careful though – due to the heat and dryness fires can break out easily, so watch the park rules!

Castaic Lake State Recreation Area

Castaic Lake is about one hour north of downtown Los Angeles in the Angeles woods. This spot lets you fully enjoy any kind of water activities. Fishing, boating, water skiing, swimming, canoeing and so much more will keep you in and on the water all day long. At night time you can stay at the Lower Lake on the campgrounds. Make sure though that you get your reservation done on time. Even if you pay with a credit card, you must book at least 3 days in advance, if you prefer to pay by check you need to book a spot at least 30 days in advance.

Lake Hemet Campground

Lake Hemet is an ideal place if you want to go fishing, swimming or hiking. It’s in a rather remote area close to Riverside in the San Bernardino National Forest. You can camp close to the water and have a spectacular view of the mountains. There are playgrounds, and rangers ensure your safety and that the place is kept in order. This is the perfect place to come and visit with the kids!

Get out this summer, enjoy the nice temperatures and visit the beautiful Southern Californian lakes! Fox Rent A Car wants to hear your lake camping adventures. What stories can you tell us about your last lake camping trip? Raccoons, bears, coyotes? We want to hear your camping stories!

6 Most Historic Sites in Southern California

For many foreigners, especially for Europeans, the United States do not have any history. Luckily, this is only half of the story. There are indeed historic places, just not as old as the Europeans may expect! Fox Rent A Car presents the 6 most historic sites in Southern California:

1. Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego

One of the most historical sites you will find in San Diego is Cabrillo National Monument. It got built in 1913 but represents the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who guided the first European ships to this area. Besides the old Light House, you can see the monument, an exhibition about the landing, and of course enjoy the spectacular view!

2. William Heath Davis House in San Diego

Built in 1850, The William Heath Davis House is more than 150 years old and for a wooden construction, this is quite an age. It is located in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter and each room of the house presents the life of its former inhabitants, which include Alonzo Horton (San Diego’s founder), pre-civil war soldiers, and even from a German Spy! Get as close to the old times as you can!

3. San Luis Rey de Francia, Oceanside

The San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside, just a few miles North of San Diego downtown, is one of the oldest missions you will find in Southern California. In addition, it is also the largest one of 21 California missions. Definitely a place to see!

4. The Angels Flight railway in Los Angeles

This railway opened in 1901 and was used as an easy and convenient way to get to Bunkers Hill. In the late 1960’s, the railway was closed but proudly reopened its doors in 1996.

5. The Queen Mary in Long Beach

As the sister ship of The Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mary was built in the 1930s. For more than a decade it held the title for the fastest transcontinental trip. Later on, the Queen Mary got rebuilt for WW II, and even participated in the D-Day invasion. The ship retired in the late ‘60s and is open to visit, learn and entertain.

6. The Bradbury Building in Los Angeles

This is what you can call old: the Bradbury Building got constructed in 1893 and is full of mysteries and legends. From the outside, you will see the amazing style of the Italian Renaissance, from the inside you will get yourself into the game of light and shadows. The Bradbury Building served as a location for several movies, such as Quantum Leap, Blade Runner, Lethal Weapon 4, and Pushing Daisies.

The places may not be built in the 1500’s, but there is still a lot to see and enjoy, even for Europeans! Do you have any other historic places in Southern California which are definitely worth to visit? Let us know! We are glad to hearing from you.

Memorial Day 2010 in Southern California

The Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner and you still have no idea how to welcome summer 2010? Here are some ideas of what you can do around our Fox Rent a Car locations in San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles. Whether you plan to travel to beautiful Southern California or live close by, some of the events we present to you may get you off your couches. If you are planning to visit Northern California on Memorial Day weekend, read our post about Memorial Day Getaways in Northern California.

Things to do on Memorial Day in San Diego:

Being a military town, San Diego offers a variety of events and ceremonies for the fallen soldiers. The probably most impressive event will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in Point Loma. The Memorial Day Service starts at 10am and next to showing your respect to San Diego’s fallen ones, you can lose yourself in the impressive view from the Cemetery over Coronado, San Diego Downtown and Cabrillo Momument. Or, if you have not been there yet, visit the exhibition Japanese Americans in the Military at the Veterans Museum & Memorial Center. The exhibition will end on May 31st, so hurry up! More info and how to get there are on the Balbo Park website.

In Coronado, you can visit Coronado Star Park, where a ceremony will be held from 10am. Getting to Coronado that weekend plus finding parking may be tricky, so allow yourself enough time for both to be on time.

There are a number of fun things to do too this Memorial Day weekend in San Diego, you can find an awesome list here:

Things to do on Memorial Day in Orange County:

Orange County has a lot to offer this Memorial Day weekend. Services and Ceremonies are mostly held on May 28th in all major cities, such as Anaheim, Fullerton, and San Clemente. The Orange County City Guide provides you with a complete calendar so that you can choose where to go. Afterwards, you can spend the rest of the day on the beaches, stroll through the malls, go fishing or BBQ at your favorite park. For those of you who are in Anaheim on Memorial Day weekend, you can see Disneyland Park’s firework at 9.25pm every night.

Things to do on Memorial Day in Los Angeles:

Just a little up North from Orange County Memorial Day gets more culturally influenced. There is an art festival in Hermosa Beach, Cajun Creole Music Festival in Simi Valley, St. Nicholas Valley Greek Festival in Northridge, and the Annual Topanga Days Country Fair. Sounds like a lot of fun exploring music and arts, enjoying Greek food and entertainment!

Of course, there are also the obligatory Memorial Day Ceremonies, among others in Forest Lawn, where you can attend any of their Patriotic Memorial Day Program on May 31st. A detailed list of locations is on the Forest Lawn website.

Tell us your plans!

So where will Memorial Day take you in 2010? Will you plan a trip, or rather stay local? What is your favorite spot for the Memorial Day? Tell us and all of our readers what you like to do, help non-locals in preparing their trip and eventually even meet some of those people at the events! We are looking forward to hearing your plans and stories!
