Animal Parks in San Diego by Fox Car Rental

San Diego has plenty of places to present the wonders of nature and wildlife to you. Whether you are interested in ocean habitat, desert animals or a combination of animals from all over the world – there is the perfect spot for all of you. We know where you can enjoy nature and animals. You and your kids will love these trips!

San Diego Animal Parks: San Diego Zoo

This zoo is one of the top-rated zoos in the United States, and is internationally highly ranked due to its Panda station and exhibition. Besides well-known and many rare animals, the San Diego Zoo also is a botanical garden presenting more than 6,500 kinds of plants. The zoo is huge and it will take you at least half a day to walk through. You should grab a map and draw your route on it before you start walking. The paths can be quite long so keep your total route short, especially if you know that you cannot walk very far. Your walking efforts will be worth it though: various sites, such as the Outback, Tiger River, Elephant Odyssey, Gorilla Tropics, Africa Rocks, Sun Bear Forest and so much more are waiting for you!

San Diego Animal Parks: Wild Animal Park

San Diego Wild Animal Park is located about 35 miles north of San Diego, plan a 45-minute ride if you stay somewhere in Downtown. Parking is available for a fee, so take some cash with you. Once you are in the park, you will get very close to the wild animals. Check out the Journey into Africa Tour, Elephant Overlook, the Hidden Jungle or Kilimanjaro Safari Walk. Not enough? What about Condor Ridge or Lion Camp? San Diego Wild Animal Park also offers tours and safaris for your very special and unique experience.

San Diego Animal Parks: SeaWorld

SeaWorld San Diego – home of Shamu and his friends! You can easily walk through this park and catch some great shows and entertainment. There are various rides for all ages, plenty of shows with dolphins, pets, the Clydesdales and of course with Shamu. You will find the show schedules on the map that you receive at the entrance. Make sure you arrive about 30 minutes before the show starts and choose wisely whether you and your family want to get wet or not. The danger zone is marked so that you won’t get surprised.

San Diego Animal Parks: Birch Aquarium

Birch Aquarium is the smallest, yet cheapest animal discovery place that you can find in San Diego. It is located in La Jolla, about 12 miles north of San Diego downtown. You can find the whole range of the Pacific marine life, including seahorses, sharks, and coral reefs. Go outside onto the deck of Birch Aquarium, you will find some nice exhibits there. Further, you will have a great view of the Pacific Ocean, San Diego beaches and La Jolla. Its picture time!

We at Fox Rent A Car hope that you have an awesome and educational time for yourself and the whole family. Learn how animals live and behave outside of the parks, yet get close enough to fully enjoy those wonders of the nature. Also, tell us your stories! What did you like most about any of these parks, and what do you recommend to get discounts on the admission prices?

6 Most Historic Sites in Southern California

For many foreigners, especially for Europeans, the United States do not have any history. Luckily, this is only half of the story. There are indeed historic places, just not as old as the Europeans may expect! Fox Rent A Car presents the 6 most historic sites in Southern California:

1. Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego

One of the most historical sites you will find in San Diego is Cabrillo National Monument. It got built in 1913 but represents the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who guided the first European ships to this area. Besides the old Light House, you can see the monument, an exhibition about the landing, and of course enjoy the spectacular view!

2. William Heath Davis House in San Diego

Built in 1850, The William Heath Davis House is more than 150 years old and for a wooden construction, this is quite an age. It is located in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter and each room of the house presents the life of its former inhabitants, which include Alonzo Horton (San Diego’s founder), pre-civil war soldiers, and even from a German Spy! Get as close to the old times as you can!

3. San Luis Rey de Francia, Oceanside

The San Luis Rey de Francia in Oceanside, just a few miles North of San Diego downtown, is one of the oldest missions you will find in Southern California. In addition, it is also the largest one of 21 California missions. Definitely a place to see!

4. The Angels Flight railway in Los Angeles

This railway opened in 1901 and was used as an easy and convenient way to get to Bunkers Hill. In the late 1960’s, the railway was closed but proudly reopened its doors in 1996.

5. The Queen Mary in Long Beach

As the sister ship of The Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mary was built in the 1930s. For more than a decade it held the title for the fastest transcontinental trip. Later on, the Queen Mary got rebuilt for WW II, and even participated in the D-Day invasion. The ship retired in the late ‘60s and is open to visit, learn and entertain.

6. The Bradbury Building in Los Angeles

This is what you can call old: the Bradbury Building got constructed in 1893 and is full of mysteries and legends. From the outside, you will see the amazing style of the Italian Renaissance, from the inside you will get yourself into the game of light and shadows. The Bradbury Building served as a location for several movies, such as Quantum Leap, Blade Runner, Lethal Weapon 4, and Pushing Daisies.

The places may not be built in the 1500’s, but there is still a lot to see and enjoy, even for Europeans! Do you have any other historic places in Southern California which are definitely worth to visit? Let us know! We are glad to hearing from you.

Legoland California in San Diego

Who does not know those tiny plastic figures and bricks we all used to build houses and farms with? Just as we did, our children and even our grand children now live the joy of assembling new constructions and creating architectural wonders in the kid’s room, Legoland California in Carlsbad, CA does the same. Just bigger. Much bigger.

What to see at Legoland California:

Only 30 miles north of San Diego, you will become a child again, and you see children’s eyes blooming. Legoland California offers more than 50 attractions for kids between 2 and 12, and is constantly expanding. This year, the Legoland Waterpark opens at the end of May, right on Memorial Day weekend! So pack the family into your car and test the splash! There will be several slides for singe riders, groups of up to four, toddler areas and body slides. No matter which one you chose – bring a little patience for the lines, and of course your towel!

For those of you who want to save the $10 extra to the normal admission fee of $67 by skipping Legoland Waterpark, you are going to miss out on something very exciting for sure. However, there are many other adventures that will keep you and your loved ones busy for at least one day! Take a ride in the dragon at Knight’s Kingdom, allow the kids to ride their own horses at the Royal Joust, or let them run on the Hideaways, the playground our young ones will love for sure. You like sightseeing and traveling? Don’t go any further – Mini Land USA has the country’s most important attractions and fitting scenery built from the little bricks.
More than 15,000 different figures in the whole park are made out of Lego bricks, a total of 35 million bricks has been used to build them! It’s hard to imagine how many warehouses this could be. Any idea?

Legoland California in Carlsbad offers more though than just pure entertainment. It teaches basic driving skills at Volvo Driving School, makes up for the missed visit at the gym at the Fun Town Fire Academy and even shows you how the famous little Lego stones get molded, colored and packed.

Directions to Legoland California:

Legoland California
One LEGOLAND Drive
Carlsbad, CA 92008 USA

Legoland California is located in Carlsbad, about 30 minutes north of San Diego Downtown, and about 1 hour south of Anaheim. You to reach it from the coastal San Diego areas, take the Interstate 5 to Cannon Road East in Carlsbad and all you need to do then is to follow the signs that will take you to the parking lot. Be careful – parking is extra and hits hard with $12!

If you are traveling from North San Diego County Inland:
15 North or South to 78 West to 5 South, Cannon Road East exit

Visitors from East San Diego County (via Hotel Circle):
8 West to 5 North, Cannon Road East exit

If you drive from Los Angeles and Orange County:
405 South, merge to 5 South to Cannon Road East

Prices, coupons and discounts for Legoland California:

Legoland California, just like any other entertainment park in San Diego, can get quite pricy, especially when you are traveling with kids, which in this case you most likely will. Take advantage of a variety of Legoland coupons or San Diego combo tickets that allow you to visit other places as well, such as the San Diego Zoo or the Wild Animal Park.

Legoland regularly offers discounted tickets on their website www.legoland.com. Check it out before you head there, maybe you find some discount that is just right for you. AAA members can save big, too. Up to six visitors can save 10% off all ticket types. If you book your ticket via the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau you will find some great deals too. Take some time for the coupon hunt, and enjoy your trip even more.
