Discover Pike Place Market, Seattle

Pike Place Market in Seattle is a operating farmer’s market that has been around for more than a 100 years. Founded in 1907 on August 17th, this has been a place for farmers, craftsmen and merchants to share their wares with willing customers who swarm over the fresh produce. There are also handmade crafts and other interesting artifacts that one gets to see as one walks along this market that overlooks the Elliott Bay waterfront. The location and the variety that the marketplace presents, makes it a unique shopping, dining and entertainment experience. The market gained importance when about 10,000 visitors barged on the place on the day it was opened. Today the market easily attracts more than 40,000 customers on a good day.

The Making of the Pike Place Market in Seattle

It is interesting to note how the Pike Place market was actually created. Before its creation, Seattle farmers sold the produce in three-square block area called The Lots. This was located at the Sixth Avenue and King Street. Since the farmers needed to get back to their farm, they sold their produce to wholesalers and middlemen who then jacked up the price for the consumer. The farmers in fact did not make large profits at all.

Knowing the situation well, a Seattle city councilman, lawyer and editor, Thomas P. Revelle took advantage of a city ordinance and declared the Western Avenue above the Elliott bay as the Pike Place. The first building on the marketplace was the Main Arcade and over time there came the Sanitary Market and more.

Main Attractions in Pike Place Market, Seattle

One of the most popular attractions of the Pike Place Market is the Pike Place Fish Market where you can literally see flying fish as the employees toss large salmons and other fish to each other for preparation as the order is placed.

You might also want to check out the first Starbucks Coffee Store that was founded in 1971. While it was located at 2000 Western Avenue initially, it was moved to 1912 Pike Place in 1977. But it has been operational in this location ever since.

While you are in the Pike Place market, make sure that you check out the unofficial mascot of the place – a 550 pound bronze piggy bank. The mascot is called Rachael and was designed by local artist Georgia Gerber. The mascot is also used for the theme for the Pigs on Parade that was first held in 2001.

As you take a closer look at the wares and the crafts, do not miss out on the street entertainers. Pike place Market is known for its buskers. Some of the performers here have even received acknowledgement and fame.

Do not forget to pick some delectable handmade cheese from the Beecher’s Handmade Cheese shop or take back some Balsamic Vinegar from the DeLaurenti Specialty Food & Wine place. The flower market and the fruits place provide a range that you would never have seen before in one place. Dilettante Chocolates in First Avenue is also a must visit for some awesome truffles and chocolate sauces.

Restaurants at Pike Place Market, Seattle

There is no doubt that as you walk along the Pike Place Market you are bound to feel hungry. Knowing the good places that you can visit along the market and the cuisine that you can expect is helpful. Choose the Le Panier opposite the Main Arcade if you want to catch a good meal before you start off on your shopping spree. This is a French Bakery and you can enjoy a large cappuccino or a café latte as you enjoy the morning. The croissants and pinwheels are sure to tempt anyone in the vicinity. Another good place to catch some dandy doughnuts is the Daily Dozen Doughnuts at the Economy Market Building. Other breakfast options include the Pike Place Bagel and Crumpet Shop.

Order at the counter if you want to catch a quick bite at pan Africa, but if you want table service you may want to check out Virginia Inn or Le Pichet. Some other great over the counter food can be sampled at Turkish Delight, Bottega Italiana, Three Girls Bakery or Piroshky Piroshky.

Formal restaurants at Pike Place Market include Etta’s Seafood, Cutters Bay House, Typhoon, Place Pigalle and Maximilien in the Market.

Pike Place Market, Seattle: When to Go

The Pike Place Market is open every day of the week. It operates between 10am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday and between 11am to 5pm on Sundays. On some summer days when the farming season is in full swing, the markets open early at around 8am.

You can enter Cascades National Park from the Cascade River Road from Marblemount or the Stehekin Valley Road. The Lake Chelan National recreation Park cannot be accessed by road and the only way to get there is by trail.

Winter is a great time to go if you are interested in skiing and prefer to go to places where there are lesser crowds.

Cascades National Park Weather

Those interested in traversing the highest trails should visit the park in the summer since the snow is off from even the highest trails in the area on most years. But summer storms are common and should be watched out for when camping. The level of snow that the place gets varies significantly depending on the elevation of the place. The east side of the park is drier and warmer than the west side and the Ross Lake area.

Things to do in the Cascades National Park

When you are looking at all that you can do in the park on your visit, the first thing that you may want to do is to check in with the local ranger office. Rangers can help you with valuable information about each trail permits and licenses and any other information that you may need about the area. There are also some scheduled programs that are held regularly like the one at the Colonial Creek Campground. But there is also a lot that you can do on your own.

Cascades National Park Hiking Trails

There are more than 350 miles of trails that are maintained and patrolled in the Cascades Park. There are also about 200 campsites for adventure enthusiasts. Trails that do not take you to higher elevations are open from April to October but those that are higher up open up only after June. One of the most loved trails is the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail at an elevation of more than 4800 feet.

Cascades National Park – Wildlife

From lowland valleys to dense forests and glacier peaks, the Cascades National Forest covers a large variety of climatic areas. At each stage you can see a variety of wildlife corresponding to the environment and climate of the place. From reptiles to mountain goats and bighorn sheep, you can see it all.

Cascades National Park – Mountain Climbing

While mountain climbing is allowed in the area, the peaks and cliffs are extremely challenging. It is therefore essential that you have the required permit and all the equipment that you may need to overcome these tough cliffs. Make sure that you have a word with the rangers before you start off on your mountain climbing trip.

Skiing in Seattle: Stevens Pass

The Stevens Pass is a great ski area that is located at the crest of the Stevens Pass in the Cascade Range of Washington. The base elevation of the pass is 40611 feet and the peak is at 5845 feet. The ski area was developed by Don Adams and Bruce Kehr who were also passionate skiers. This occurred in the winter of 1937-38.

The pass offers the most interesting and diverse terrain for skiing. The quality and quantity of the snow is just about perfect for skiing. The area is also filled with Hemlock, Pacific Silver Fir and Sub-Alpine Fir. The place looks like a snow wonderland after a snowfall. And the best thing is that the temperatures in the area are around 20 degrees, something that is relatively comfortable.

If you are visiting the area, using a four wheel or a utility vehicle can help in navigating the snowy terrain. Taking the US Highway 2 is a good idea since it is about 78 miles east of Seattle. Lodging options include the Skykomish Hotel that can offer you a traditional feel to the staying and dining experience.

There are essentially two sides of the pass. The front side allows access to chairlifts like the Daisy (for the beginner), the Hogsback, the Skyline, The Brooks and the Big Chef. There are also 3 chair lifts that are relatively higher on the front side that include Seventh Heaven, Tye Mill and double Diamond. The backside, also called the Mill Valley is more natural and has better scenic beauty. It has two lifts called the Jupiter and Southern Cross.

Cross Country skiing is something that is allowed and the Stevens pass Nordic Center allows access to 28 kilometers of a groomed trail.

There is also the HuskiBus Ski Shuttle that provides service along with entertainment and a complete skiing experience. The bus departs from Burke Museum at 07:30 AM, the Schmits Hall at 08:00 AM and leaves Stevens pass at 03:30 PM. There are also other buses that leave at different times too.

The boarding, lodging, rentals, lift tickets, ski rentals and more can cost a fair amount of money. A good idea to save money is to scout for coupons and discounts on the Internet so that you can make the most of the holiday.

Those who do not care for skiing can also enjoy in this location with snowshowing, snow mobiles and more. If nothing else playing in the snow will prove to be a great experience thanks to the quality of the snow in the area.
