Fox Rent A Car presents: Agua Caliente, Borrego Springs

Located 78 miles northeast of San Diego, Borrego Springs is placed in the middle of the Borrego Valley in southeastern California. At a sea level of 780 feet, the place is surrounded by acres of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Winter is a great time to visit Borrego Springs since it is often said to be the hottest place in the United States in summer. Temperatures in the months of November and December range between 43 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit, with the average being around the high fifties and low sixties.

Among the various facilities that are administered by the Californian San Diego County is the Agua Caliente Park. The place is known for its heated springs and people come from far and wide to soak in waters that are considered therapeutic. And while the motive may be to visit these hot springs, there are also other activities that one can indulge in since the place has numerous trails and meandering rustic roads.

What is Agua Caliente?

The Agua Caliente Hot Springs Park covers an area of approximately 910 acres that has been created due to a fault in the seismic forces of the mountains. This is what forces the hot water from beneath to move upwards. The beauty of the place is accentuated by the simple desert and blue sky combination. On days when you do not want to soak in the sun, there is the Moonlight Trail, the Marsh Trail and the Desert Overlook Trail that can provide a lot of adventure for explorers.

The camping sites have grills on fire rings and if you have some wood, cleaning material and some meat, you can make a meal in the moonlight too. You can listen to the frogs croaking and the raccoons too. For the animal lover the coyotes barking in the morning can also be a nice change from the blowing horns of the city.

There is also a picnic area, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard courts and play areas for children too. While water and sewer are available at all times, those addicted to cable television or those who need wireless Internet connection may have to make their own arrangements. Pets are allowed in this park and so dog lovers and pet owners do not have to make kennel arrangements for their loved pets when visiting Agua Caliente.

When and How to Go to Agua Caliente

Since Agua Caliente is located in Borrego Springs that is on the edge of the Sonoran Desert, the place sees extremely hot weather during the summer. The park is therefore closed between June and September. A $5 ticket can allow you entrance for your vehicle for the entire day. If you want to use the developed tent site you will need to pay $19. Partial hookups for recreational vehicles is at $24 and full hooks ups require $28.

The outdoor hot springs at Agua Caliente can be used daily from 8am to sunset. The indoor ones are open from 8am to 5:30pm for non campers. Campers can enjoy the springs till 8;30pm on Friday and Saturday.

Some Rules and Regulations at Agua Caliente

As in most campsites, camping is allowed only in specific places and only 2 tents are allowed per site to ensure that the place does not get too crowded. A maximum limit for camping is 14 days after which you have to vacate the premises. To respect the privacy of others 10pm to 7am are quiet hours where loud music or sounds are not allowed.

Vehicles that enter the park need to remain on the designated roads and off road driving is not permitted. It is expected that those who come visiting to this area will help preserve animal life and plants and in no way damage archaeological resources.

What you Should Know about Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can help in various situations including a medical condition while you are abroad or canceled flights. Traveling overseas can be an expensive affair and it is foolhardy to assume that nothing can happen to you or your companions as you travel. Just as the other insurance policies that you may have explored, travel insurance can also get complicated at times. Here are some of the things that you need to know to ensure that you are sufficiently and adequately covered.

1.       Check what you have – Travel Insurance

Before you start to reach out to travel agents to get new travel insurance, it is wise to check the polices that you have to see what they cover. It is important to know that Medicare does not provide coverage outside of the United States. Check your personal medical insurance, if you have one, and ensure that it takes care of overseas medical needs. Print out a form and take it along with you when traveling. Overseas medical coverage is also included in some International credit cards as well.

2.        Types of travel medical insurance –Travel Insurance

While the specific items covered and the amount that you can claim differs across insurance companies, there are essentially 2 kinds of travel insurance policies – Travel Medical Insurance and Travel Evacuation Insurance.

3.       Coverage –Travel Insurance

Along with the medical coverage that travel insurance provides, other items such as trip cancellation and interruption is also covered. This is actually the most common kind of travel policy that is sold since international medical coverage is provided by some form of insurance that people already have. The cancellation and interruption travel policy comes into action when you cannot travel after booking your tickets due to some unforeseen circumstances like illness, debt, a jury duty call or cancellation of the flight by the carrier. In addition to that travel insurance also covers accidental death, trip delays, baggage insurance and emergency assistance too.

4.       Costs –Travel Insurance

The amount that you will need to pay for travel insurance depends on various factors. These include age of the traveler, trip length, trip cost and the specific areas that you want covered (medical, baggage, trip cancellation etc). Typically, travel insurance costs hover between 4 percent and 8 percent of the total trip cost. It is judicious for frequent travelers to get annual travel insurance to save costs. The difference can be significant and will depend on the number of trips that you are likely to take in a year.

5.       Insurance policy –Travel Insurance

It is necessary to carry the travel insurance policy with you along with the booklet that outlines procedures and places that support the policy. It is also wise to keep a photocopy back home in case you may lose the original. In case of an accident or emergency inform the authorities at once and get the case recorded. And as you spend your money on the medical situation or the booking of extra tickets, make sure that you keep a copy of all the receipts as you do so.

A great thing about Julian is that unlike most other towns that were created during the Gold Rush, it never really became a ghost town. It can easily be understood why.

Julian is an amazingly enchanting place and is so beautiful that none would want to leave it if they could stay on forever. Even today, the place has its charm that has now become manifold due to the friendly folks. Even though Julian is located in California, the Laguna Mountains ensure that the town gets four distinct seasons.

The town is extremely popular among those located in San Diego and others from South California since it gives visitors a peek into rural mountainside lifestyle. Far away from the sand and surf, this quaint little town offers oak and pine forests.

Julian, CA: Getting There

Take Highway 67 towards Ramona and as this highway turns into Highway 78 follow the road up to Julian. Alternately you can take I-8 East to 79 and travel through the Cuyamaca State Park to Julian. The produce is so large that you can pick apples as you walk or visit some local orchards to taste some varieties that you are not likely to find elsewhere in the world. Freshly picked apples are used to make apple pies in almost every café in Julian and we can bet that you shall not be able to pick a favorite from the many varieties that are served since they are all so great!

The Julian Pie Company offers an enjoyable apple pie eating experience. When you are in this Gold Rush town you have to take a peek at the Southern California’s Mother Lode at the Eagle Mining Company. Here you can witness the underground works and recreated gold milling process.

Take a ride and learn all about horsemanship at the Julian Stables or check out a private astronomical observatory.

Even though the 2003 Cedar wildfire did destroy most of the adjacent areas, the town itself was spared the destruction. So take advantage of the fact that this beautiful town still exists and plan a weekend getaway as soon as you can.

Weekend Getaway Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is one of the oldest cities of California. The Mediterranean climate and the red tiled roofs bring memories of small seaside towns in Europe. Located about 90 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 330 miles south of San Francisco, it makes for a great weekend getaway for people living in these cities.

Weekend Getaway Santa Barbara: Getting There

One of the best ways to get to Santa Barbara is to take Highway 101. If you are traveling from the south, then you might want to opt for Highway 217 exit and check for specific directions. If you are traveling from the north, then the Storke Road exit and a drive towards the south is what is recommended.

Weekend Getaway Santa Barbara: Best Time to Go

Santa Barbara has good Californian weather uniformly due to its south facing location and topography. So it makes for a great weekend getaway irrespective of the time of the year that you want to take a few days off. Do note however, that summers are relatively more crowded as local hotels fill up with people who come here for UCSB’s orientation, homecoming and graduation.

Weekend Getaway Santa Barbara: Things to Do

The one thing that you do not want to miss when you drive to Santa Barbara is the arts and crafts show that is held every weekend. This takes place at the Cabrillo Boulevard. The place is always buzzing with excitement, the people are warm and hospitable and the food is excellent.

You may also want to check out the waterfront lined with palm trees. As you take this relaxing walk, take time off to visit Stearns Wharf where you can visit the Sea Center and pick up some souvenirs too. Once you are done with the seaside, take the State Street away from the seaside and you will come across some lively street shops where you can find some great picks. Not many are aware but Santa Barbara produces some excellent Californian chardonnays and pinot noirs. You can go wine tasting on one of the days that you are here too.

Don’t miss the leisurely brunch at the Brown Pelican where you get a great view of Hendry’s Beach. Lunch at Cold Spring tavern is also something that you should try and catch if you have time and are not too full already with the brunch.

For nature lovers, the Santa Barbara Botanical gardens offer a breathtaking view as the flora is mesmerizing. Park your car and hire a bike to be with nature for a while. Nature lovers can also hike on a trail in the Los Padres National Forest.

Weekend Getaway Santa Barbara: Romantic Resorts

While Santa Barbara is an enjoyable getaway for the family, it is also a romantic destination for a twosome. The glitterati have been known to get away from the paparazzi for many years. The private cottages at San Ysidro Ranch are a great place for a private rendezvous.

Some good resorts and hotels include the El Encanto Hotel, Pierpointe Inn, Historic Mission Inn and the Meadowood Resort.

Visit Kings Canyon by Fox Rent A Car

Kings Canyon is located midway between Los Angeles and San Francisco and is about a five hour drive from each of the cities. It is a one-hour drive from the city of Fresno. This makes Kings Canyon the perfect Weekend Camping and Hiking getaway from to major metropolitan areas in beautiful California.

Other than the fact that the place provides grand scenery and serene atmosphere, the fact that the national park is relatively less crowded as compared to say the Yosemite National Park makes it a hot favorite among nature lovers, adventurers, trail hunters and animal lovers.

Kings Canyon: Getting There

You can get to Kings Canyon by taking Highway 245 or 180. Highway 245 is also mentioned as the shorter route in many maps. However, the drive is a 31 mile drive on winding road that has a speed limit of 15mph. Taking Highway 180 is probably better since it is a relatively easier route and one can speed up to 55 mph.

Kings Canyon: Best Time to Go

Kings Canyon is open throughout the year. Since it is relatively less crowded you can find a place to stay even if you book a day before in most cases. While you can enjoy the wildflower blossoms and the waterfalls in summer and spring, visitors in winter cane experience the canyon in its snowy beauty. Fall visitors are typically those who prefer to go after the hot sun has become more generous.

Kings Canyon: Entrance Fee

Entrance to the park is at $20 per vehicle. Cyclists and pedestrians are charged $10 per head. The entrance fee includes parking charges for up to 7 days. Commercial vehicles are charged an entrance fee based on the capacity of the vehicle.

If you are an avid outdoor person and see yourself driving to this amazing location more than once a year, the Sequoia/Kings Canyon park pass at $30 may make better money sense. If you opt for the National Park Pass you shall be able to visit all national parks for a year. This is priced at $50. Please note that the entrance fee includes that for the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National park.

Kings Canyon: Lodging and Camping

You can register and check in at Cedar Grove Lodge if you are visiting Kings Canyon between April and October. But if you are going there earlier or later in the year then you might want to stay at the Grant Grove Cabins & John Muir Lodge that is open throughout the year.

If you are looking for some camping fun, then you may need to check about the camping grounds too. The camping grounds are located in the most amazing oak woodlands and then there are some that are located higher up in the conifer forests too. Remember that the camping grounds are likely to be cooler than the resort lodging and so do come prepared. Do check whether the  camping ground you are booking allows RV’s if you are driving into the national park in one.

Kings Canyon: Things to do

The giant redwood trees are a feature that you should not miss at any cost even if you are here for a day. The General Sherman Tree and the General Grant Tree are favorites. If you are staying for longer there are various things that you can do including a visit to the other areas of the Sequoia park too.

- Crystal Cave – Visit this stalactite and stalagmite beauty that you may be able to access only in summer. Tickets here include a guided tour of 45 minutes through numerous rocky surfaces.

- Moro rock – When you are on the top of this monolith you will be able to see the Great Western Divide on one side and the Central Valley on the other, a sight that you will not forget in a hurry. You can get to the top via the 400 steps and reach a level of 300 feet. The round trip may take about an hour.

- Buck Rock – Created as a fire lookout, the highest point is at 8500 feet.

- Hume Lake – Created to supply water to the flume where logs floated, the Hume Lake is now used for water recreation like swimming and paddle boating.

Kings Canyon: Best Hiking Trails

Some of the most popular trails at Kings Canyon include:

-          Hotel Creek Trail

-          Mist Falls Trail

-          Redwood Mountain Grove Trail

-          Lady Bug Trail

-          Atwell-Hockett Trail

-          Tar Gap Trail

-          Mosquito/Mineral Trail

Fox Rent A Car Travel Tip: Wine Country Escapes this Fall

Wine Country Escapes this Fall

Even though the sun seems to be giving way to a chillier time, it does not really mean that you have to stash away your traveling bags and say good bye to road trips that you may not have been able to take up during the summer. A great option is to go to the Wine Country in Northern California, especially since the crushing is at its height in September and October and going there just after this season is a great idea.

Covered with oak trees, vineyards and various orchards, Northern California Wine Country has a lot to offer those who prefer the cool Pacific Coast or those who would rather opt for the warmer inland valleys like Napa and Sonoma. It is one of the most exalted viticulture regions and gives France’s vineyards a run to its quality and taste.

It might interest some to know that the Wine Country in and around Napa and Sonoma Valley has been producing great quality wine since 1857. This happened when Hungarian Count Ágoston Haraszthy developed the first commercial winery for the state, Buena Vista. It almost seemed as if this was a greatly kept secret of the Sonoma valley because it was only in sometime in the 1970’s that the wineries received international recognition and fame. The event where this worldwide recognition was bestowed took place in France when 2 entries from Napa Valley Chateau Montelena’s 1973 chardonnay and a Stag Leap’s 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon scored higher than the French Bordeaux in a blind test.

When you decide to visit the Napa Valley or the Sonoma Valley you have the option of choosing from about 450 wineries. This is more than a quarter of the wineries present in the state of California and yet the amount of produce that comes from these valleys is about 10 percent of Californian wine produce. The valleys concentrate on good quality wine and focus on getting great lots every year rather than dishing out large quantities that are ‘not as great’.

Napa is also an extensive of the culinary exquisiteness that you can find in San Francisco. The great part is that while you are likely to find great cuisine here, you will not have to shell out a lot of money for it either. Breakfast in the Napa Valley is something that you do not want to miss due to the lip smacking fruit jams, oven baked breads and delectable cheese.

While Napa and Sonoma Valleys are fairly well known for their wine tasting there are also various other lesser known family owned wineries in the San Francisco Bay Area too. These make great weekend escapes. Check out some wineries at Mendocino County where you can see Pinot Noirs, Zinfandels and Alsatian whites too. Another famous and preferred stop is Navarro Vineyards where you can taste the wine and your kids can enjoy juicey Gewürztraminer grape juice.

If you are driving in this area you can take a turn towards the northern San Joaquin Valley. Here you will be able to taste some of the oldest wines. Or head to the Santa Cruz region where you can taste great stuff at the local favorite Bonny Doon Vineyard.

10 Best Fall Activities for the Whole Family

Many people prefer a fall vacation as compared to a summer one since the temperatures are cooler and the prices much better too.  Add to that the better ambiance due to lesser crowds and you may have a perfect holiday. Fall vacations are also great because they give you that much-needed short break in the middle of the school session. Typically you can plan fall vacations on long weekends and there is no better time to go other than Halloween. If you are planning a getaway in the next few months, why don’t  you add some of these great Fall Activities to your list of things to do?

Fall Activities – Halloween country packages

The country offers a great getaway during the fall and this is the best place to enjoy the fall foliage as well. Opt for country inns or bed and breakfast options in the countryside. You can choose the Halloween ghost and goblin package at the Farm by the River B&B. This includes a wagon ride and a tour of various inns in and around the White Mountains. Choose the Lathrop House B&B at Springfield MA and your kids can enjoy the fun and enjoyment of carving a pumpkin too. The Ghoulish Getaway package at the Green Mountain Inn, Stowe, VT is designed for special Halloween vacations.

Fall Activities – Fall Foliage

If you are looking for some scenic fall viewing, then you need to understand that the fall colors are different in different places depending on the time of year. The best time to go to higher altitudes for fall foliage is mid September. For places that are situated at a lower altitude October is a better time. Check out the Autumnfest at Smuggler’s Notch, a place that has a lot of options for kids. Family activities, kid games, infant care and more, this is a location that offers you all. You can also get a peak at natures’ best at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Check out the guide before deciding the location and the best time to go.

Fall Activities – Pumpkin Patches

Choose to visit a pumpkin patch and you shall love the ecstatic shrieks of your children as they enjoy the hay rides, petting animals and berry picking experience. Think of a carving pattern with your kids and you can carve one on the pumpkin too. Visit the Great Arizona Puppet Theatre that is not too scary and therefore perfect for younger kids. Or visit the Fall Festival at Luv Shack Ranch and take part in face painting, cake walk, horse painting and other games. The Witches Night Out: A Halloween Costume Event includes tarot reading, belly dancers, energy healers and prizes for the best costume of ‘ugly witch’, ‘sexiest witch’ and more.

Fall Activities – Thanksgiving packages

If you are planning the fall vacation later in the year around November, take advantage of the Thanksgiving packages that are a huge money and time saver. A weekend at the Otesaga Resort Hotel can include tickets to the National Baseball hall of Fame, Fenimore Art Museum and the Farmer’s Museum. The Rocking Horse Ranch offers amazing foliage and crackling fires in addition to daytime activities like archery, wall climbing, horseback riding and more.

While you can choose to go to any of the resorts during fall for a quick getaway, choosing theme based package options for Halloween or Thanksgiving will aid in avoiding the hassle of a day plan for the vacation as all the activities are chalked out for you in the package.

10 Things you Should Always Bring in your Carry On

A vacation is a welcome break from the regular chores of home and work. But with the relief comes the tension and pressure of planning the details of the trip, ticketing, hotel bookings, packing adequately and more. While you fret about all these one aspect that you should not forget is the stuff that you need to carry along with you as carry-on baggage.
Some of the items that you need to ensure to carry along with you when you are traveling include the following:
1.    A ball point pen to fill out the custom forms and immigration details
2.    Warm clothing is also essential even if the airline provides a blanket. You never know when you may need additional cover. So carry a sweater or a jacket to keep yourself and your children comfortable.
3.    Even though most long haul flights do provide meals, it is pertinent to carry some snacks with you to consume in between meals. This is especially essential if you are travelling with children since they can feel hungry anytime. Buying snacks from the on board airline staff can be extremely costly.
4.    Basic hygiene requirements may need to be packed in the carry-on bag especially if you are travelling in the economy class. This should include toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, and moisturizer.
5.    If you do not want to look like a zombie once you alight from the plane, carry some deodorant, cream and make-up. Make sure that you comply with the rules of the airlines and carry small bottles in a transparent bag when you pass through security.
6.    Diapers and change of clothes is also a must if you are travelling with children. These will make your tots feel and look fresh after a full night sleep on the aircraft.
7.    Another carry-on baggage essential when travelling with kids is toys or an activity or coloring book. It may suffice to carry a video game for an older child but you may need some variety with a younger one.
8.    A nasal spray or saline is a good idea so that you can avoid a blocked nose during a long flight. Ensure that you are carrying wet tissues as well to keep your hands clean.
9.    Carrying the details of the hotel bookings and addresses of people whom you are likely to meet in the carry-on baggage is also recommended.
10.    Remember that you can carry your own bottled water on board if you purchase it after clearing security. Make sure to carry enough for everyone.
In most of the airlines, there are rules with regards to what you can carry on board and what you cannot. It is necessary that the carry-on baggage should fit in the overhead cabins or the seat in front of you on a flight. The amount that you are carrying should not exceed the limit allowed on the specific aircraft. Bulky items may need prior booking as may the need to carry hypodermic needles for medical purposes.

Fox Rent A Car Tip: How to Avoid Airline Fees

If you are naïve enough to feel that airfare is the only amount that you need to pay when you are travelling by air, then you are probably in for a shock. Airline fees get increasingly complicated each day. Just when you think you are aware of the excess baggage charges and know how much weight to carry for check in baggage, you may realize that the rules have changed. Below are some of the airline fees that are charged and the manner in which you can avoid them.

1.  Tip How to Avoid Airline Fees:  Check-in Baggage

Most of the airlines allow you to carry 2 pieces of check-in baggage. But some airlines are beginning to charge for this too. The practice has become so prevalent across the United States that some airlines that have not converted are using this is as a unique selling proposition. Even if you have traveled with a particular airline, make sure that you check the policy to confirm that they are still allowing check-in baggage. Find the current policies for all major airlines here!

2.    Tip How to Avoid Airline Fees: Oversize and Overweight Baggage

Airlines have always charged extra for excess baggage whether it is in terms of size or weight. Do make sure that you surf the entire site of the airline for this information, even if it is hidden in the deepest corner of the sitemap.

3.  Tip How to Avoid Airline Fees: Operator Services

The involvement of human personnel for any information or processing is being discouraged. This is mainly to save costs on salaries and to minimize the number of employees that they need to hire. And this is the reason why some budget airlines are charging for any interaction that requires human intervention like printing the boarding pass.

4.  Tip How to Avoid Airline Fees: In-flight Movies

People who have discovered in hotels that they are being charged for specific movies that they might have watched last night, can also expect to be charged for movies or videos that are ordered on the flight. Even though the fares are low, you can avoid this cost by watching DVD’s on your laptop.

5.   Tip How to Avoid Airline Fees: Snacks and Refreshments

Snacks and refreshments are a major source of profit for airlines. A small bag of chips can cost $5. It is judicious that you stash a few packs of biscuits and snacks in your carry on bag rather than pay dearly for it when you feel hungry during the flight.

6.    Tip How to Avoid Airline Fees: Seat Selection

If you want to extra leg space that comes with the exit row or the first row, then you need to pay more. The online check-in process allows passengers to choose seats for a small fare. Seat selection at the time of check-in is free though.

7.    Tip How to Avoid Airline Fees: Pillows and Blankets

Most airlines carriers provided a cozy blanket for the comfort of the passengers. This is no longer true and flights can get extremely cold and uncomfortable. Make sure that you are adequately covered and carry a small and thin blanket if you can in your cabin baggage.
