If you’re a frequent traveler, then there’s no better way to save than using a travel credit card.

You can use the travel rewards credit card to make all of your purchases and simply pay it off every month. You’ll be able to rack up points in no time, and start redeeming them for flights and hotel stays.

The second part of NextAdvisor’s Travel Reward Analysis was focused on best rewards credit cards. Here are the top 5 options for those looking.

1. Starwood Preferred Guest Card from American Express

Just like with their hotel rewards program, Starwoods travel credit card also came out on top. Users can get up to 4 or 5 points for each dollar spent on hotel and a 1:1 ratio for all other purchases.

Another great benefit is that users can get a third night free.

2. Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Card from Chase

The Southwest Airlines card will earn 2 points for each dollar spent on flights, and $1 for all other purchases. You can also earn a free flight with your first purchase.

You’re limited to flying for domestic flights only. They also have published conversion ratios to help you figure out what you’ll receive.

3. United MileagePlus Explorer Card

The United card earns 2 points for every $1 spent on United or Continental flights. Other benefits include privileges when boarding, your first bag checked for free, and two passes to the United Club.

4. American Airlines AAdvantage

You can earn 1 point for each dollar spent on your American Airlines AAdvantage (Citi Gold/AAdvantage World Mastercard).

You can also book flights on other airlines such as British Airways, Japan Airlines, Quantas, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue.

However a huge downside is that users can max out at 60,000 points per year.

5. Delta Skymiles

You can earn 1 mile for each dollar spent on your Platinum Delta Skymiles from American Express.

It also comes with an annual complementary Delta companion ticket and you can check your first bag free on Delta flights.

You cannot use it to redeem for hotel stays.

How to Find the Best Airline Seats for your Buck

Every seat on a flight can be a different price.

That means the people sitting on both sides of you could have paid much more… or much less!

Why?

Well… it’s complicated.

There are many ways to save money when traveling.

You should always plan ahead and be properly prepared. If you can, you should also try and travel during the slow months for each location. Your savings may also come down to how far in advance you make a reservation.

Much like renting a car or booking a hotel room, there are other major factors that your price typically depends on. These include:

  • Competition on Route
  • Seat Demand
  • Distance of Route
  • Seat Supply
  • Fuel Prices

These factors are logical and make sense. Unfortunately, that’s not where it stops.

FareCompare’s Airline Hurdles

According to an article from FareCompare.com, airlines have other “hurdles” that can influence the actual price you pay.

Here is a quick list of the remaining factors you need to be aware of:

  • Advance Purchase
  • Minimum Stay
  • Departure Day Requirements
  • Flight Time Requirements
  • Maximum Stay
  • Travel Window
  • Purchase Date
  • Flight Restrictions
  • Blackouts

Please go read the full article for the details.

How to Find the Best Travel Bargains

There are thousands of websites out there with travel information.

A lot of them are great… but they’re hard to find.

Here are some of our favorite websites where you can find the best travel bargains.

Search!

Best Online Budget Information

The best online resources would have to be Budget Travel.

They highlight great travel deals, packages, and have the latest information for savvy travelers.

Budget Travel also has a great community where other people share their personal experiences and tips.

Best Websites to Book a Hotel or Flight

If you’re looking for a great rate, and don’t care specifically about what hotel or flight, then bidding on Priceline and Hotwire can save you tons.

But a little forum called Better Bidding will help you identify what you’re bidding on (based on past results).

Now you’ll be able to tell if it’s worth it… and just how much you’re saving!

Best Auction Site

Sure, you’ve tried Ebay before. It’s great for little stuff or last minute concern tickets.

But did you know you can bid on travel deals? It’s true!

You can get great deals on all inclusive packages for romantic getaways or family vacations.

Best Travel Search Engines

If none of those are of much help, then you should turn your search to the travel search engines that compile all the best rates.

4 Tips for When to Buy a Plane Ticket

Buying a plane ticket is all about timing.

Too early and you’ll pay extra. Too late and it’ll cost you an arm.

The rate you pay even depends on the day of the week!

Here are 4 tips for when to buy a plane ticket.

1. Skip the Weekends!

Plane tickets are almost always more expensive on weekends. Airlines will get in bidding wars and push prices up during the week. By the time the weekend rolls around, ticket prices are at their peak.

Prices are typically automatically adjusted as well, so they’ll keep climbing until a certain point without human interference.

2. Tuesday and Wednesday are best

The middle of the week has been shown to be the best time to buy.

According to the Wall Street Journal,

Many sales, in which some seats are discounted by 15% to 25% typically, are launched Monday night. Competitors typically match the lower prices Tuesday morning. By Thursday or Friday, many sales have already expired.

That gives you a brief window of opportunity from late Monday night until Thursday morning to jump on the best price. Don’t miss out!

3. Three Months Ahead of Time

Even thought you’re planning ahead, don’t be too early!

According to FareCompare.com, “Airlines start discounting 3 1/2 months before departure”.

Anytime before 3 months and airlines know you’re looking to travel on those exact dates. It’s better to wait a little longer and see if the premiums go down.

4. Book Before It’s too Late!

Unfortunately, the “last minute” airfare may never come.

FareCompare.com says 14 days before departure is the point of no return.

Although last minute fares are always possible if it’s a slow time of year, it’s the exception to the rule.

When it gets this late, airlines know you need that last seat. They’ll expect you’ll be willing to pay for it.

How To Royally Piss Off Your Traveling Companions

Let’s say, just for the sake of argument, that you’ve won the opportunity to spend three weeks in an enclosed space with three total strangers.

During that period, you’ll be transported through some of the bleakest, most hostile and hottest environments known to man.

You’ll share a room with somebody you met only a couple of days before, and you’ll share a bathroom with that person, which means you’ll get to know them and their residual hair pretty well.

Let’s say, for example, that you won a place on the Fox Road Trip.

During that time, you’re going to have a blast. You’re going to drink cocktails with strippers in Vegas, you’re going to take early morning hot-air balloon flights, and you’re going to get comped tickets to watch live baseball games in great big stadiums.

Hell, there’s even an occasional free beer.

But it can all go to hell, and the fun can stop in a second, if you start to piss each other off.

It’s going to be TOUGH to not piss each other off. It’s an unnatural enviroment, and the hours are long.

So here’s three small pointers to keep relationships cordial, tempers intact, and rainbows shining (or whatever):

1. Shut up.

Seriously. Shut up. Spend a few minutes each day with your mouth closed. You might be hilarious, and your running commentary might be unmissable, but it’s only unmissable in your mind.

Keep your mouth closed, at least some of the time. Silence is golden, and the axe I’m going to use to cave in your head is diamond-tipped.

2. Say yes to everything

This means everybody gets to make suggestions and you all get to do cool stuff.

Because you’ve got nothing better to do, right? I mean, the sheer fact that you took three weeks out of your “busy schedule” to go on an extended, subsidized vacation means you’re basically unemployed anyway.

Keep your travels dull and your travel-buddies silently fuming by putting the kabosh on everybody else’s best laid plans. Sit in your hotel room. Surf the internet. Don’t let anybody else do anything.

3. Don’t get “too friendly” with each other.

Nothing will turn a trip sour more quickly than getting to like each other too much. Those long, long car journeys will triple in perceived length, and your tolerance for one another will diminish quicker than the gas in your tank.

Put a cork in it and get your rocks off when you get home.

There you go. Simple as those three rules. Ignore them, and you’ll royally piss off your travelling companions. Stick to them, and you’ll still piss them off, only it will take a little longer.
